Job Title: Trail Crew
Organization: McIntosh Run Watershed Association
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Job Description: The McIntosh Run Watershed Association (MRWA) is hiring 3-4 energetic people to form a Trail Crew to build singletrack trails between Spryfield and Herring Cove, Nova Scotia. The trails form part of the approved network of recreational trails on NS Crown Land and Halifax Park Land.

The Trail Crew will work 4-5 days per week, for 6-8 hours per day in the forest. The Trail Crew will hike up to 40 minutes to the job site carrying gear. Work consists of heavy manual labour with hand tools: clearing organic ground layer, trees and brush, lifting and moving large rocks and shoveling dirt. The Trail Crew will be trained and supervised by a Trail Crew Supervisor and experienced MRWA volunteer trail builders. The Trail Crew, Supervisor and volunteers must work together as a coordinated team to perform many challenging tasks. The result is a backcountry singletrack trail that will draw people into the forest to explore by foot and by mountain bike.

Requirements:
• Physically fit for manual labour, able to lift heavy loads.
• Comfortable in a wild forest setting with adverse weather, bugs and dirt.
• Experience using recreational trails.
• Experience working well with others.
• Punctual and reliable.

Preferred qualifications:
• Trail building or other relevant experience with manual labour, outdoors (landscaping, working with rocks, working with hand tools). Please explain how your experience is relevant to the job.
• Mountain biking experience.
• First aid certification.
• Clearing saw or chainsaw certification.

Rate of pay: $17 per hour (+ 4% vacation pay)

Work schedule: 4–5 days/week, 6–8 hours/day, weekdays with occasional (optional) weekend days. Work weeks may be shortened due to poor trail-building weather conditions. Please specify your availability in cover letter.

Work period: June 9th – early August 2020. Work may be extended into November if additional funds become available.

Applications must include:
• A cover letter in which you explain how you are qualified for the job and specify your expected availability through the beginning of November.
• A resume
• Contact information for 2 references

Closing Date: Please apply as soon as possible. We will accept applications until positions are filled, and we will consider applications from well-qualified, experienced trail builders throughout the season.
