Position: Education and Community Development Coordinator
Organization: Common Roots Urban Farm BiHi Park
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
About the position:
Common Roots Urban Farm BiHi Park is one of two Common Roots locations in the HRM. It is a hybrid garden located in Halifax West that focuses on education, community engagement, skills development and growing vegetables and flowers for sale and donation. In April 2019 the farms Halifax location moved from Bell & Robie to BiHi Park. Following a successful move in 2019 we are looking to engage our new community and neighbours and to increase our educational offerings. We are looking for someone who is very passionate about local food and food skills to help us as we develop lunch and learns, schools programming and reach out to the community to engage them in our onfarm events and new market stand.
Terms of Contract
April 6 - Nov 15, 2020; 30 hrs/week including 3.5hrs most Saturdays; $18 per hour
The position is as an employee of MetroWorks Employment Association, the parent organization for Common Roots.
Duties and responsibilities:
1. Coordinate and Support Educational Activities:
Schedule and Promote new Workshop Series
Schedule and promote lunch and learn workshops
Work with school groups to schedule educational opportunities and farm visits
Schedule group visits to the farm
Assist in the development of educational materials
Participate in the delivery of educational programming as needed
2. Community Outreach:
Work with the Farm Coordinator to coordinate and host 2 to 3 community events on the farm (target of 100 to 300 participants per event).
Create posters and promote weekly market stand in local community
3. Communications:
Use social media to promote educational and community events
Communicate with workshop partners and workshop facilitators
Host workshops
Do follow-up check-ins and thank-yous with presenters, groups and organizations who host us
Skills/Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this job will:
Be passionate about local food and food skills
Have strong organizational skills, including demonstrated excel/google sheets proficiency
Be very comfortable reaching out to people via phone and email
Enjoy promoting activities and basic poster design
Have experience working with and coordinating diverse groups of people
Work well both independently and in a very social setting
Experience in workshop development an asset

Payment is made through Employment Nova Scotia and generally works out to be above $15/hour for a 30 hour per week position.
To be eligible, you must be unemployed, and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. You also must meet ONE of the following:
Have a current Employment Insurance (EI) claim
Have had an EI claim that ended within the last 60 months
Have been employed with gross insurable earnings of $2000 or higher annually in at least 5 of the last 10 years.
