POSITION SUMMARY

Our Sustainable Transportation team works to increase the use of transportation modes in Nova Scotia, like walking, cycling, and transit use, that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote healthy communities, and ensure equitable access for all. The Active Transportation Communications Officer will help promote and inform the public of the work done by the Sustainable Transportation team creating compelling and interesting content about our active transport projects across the province.

ABOUT YOU

As the Active Transportation Communications Officer, you will focus on writing content for our web pages, social media channels. You have an interest in active transportation cycling and a passion for marketing and public communications. Your ability to engage diverse reader groups with your strong writing skills will enable you to effectively communicate complex topics in a compelling way. You are willing to learn and are eager contribute to the general and social media communications plans for our Sustainable Transportation team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES YOU WILL HOLD
• Content creation for web pages and social media channels including videos
• Writing press releases, opinion pieces, story sharing campaigns and other Public communications
• Assist with researching, planning and collecting data for various projects
• Develop relationships with reporters
• Administer, analyze and evaluate program surveys
• Preparation and distribution of internal and external Transportation related information (i.e. posters, PPT presentations, flyers, and other marketing materials)
• Help develop and manage the general and social media communications plan
• Draft press releases and other materials
• Capture and provide stories to the public in video/pictorial and written formats
• Share information with key community media/communications outlets
• Participate in orientation, meetings and EAC events
• Provide other support to the Transportation Team Coordinators as required

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
• Marketing and communications (working toward Degree/certification and/or relevant experience in the fields of education, journalism, PR, communications, humanities, arts or other related fields)
• Takes responsibilities seriously and maintains professionalism
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently with moderate direction
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively
• Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail
• Creative ability to devise material that effectively communicate complex topics in a compelling way.
• Experience with Office 365 as well as current social media platforms.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, effectively manage multiple tasks
• Trustworthiness and reliability
• A passion for sustainability, equity and the environment

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This position falls under The Student Summer Skills Incentive (SKILL) program and applicants must be meet the criteria of the program including, entering full time post-secondary studies in the fall following the summer 
work term or continuing full-time post-secondary studies following the summer work term SKILL recognizes post-secondary programs designated by Employment and Social Development Canada. A list of these can be found at the following web site.
• Starting early May 2021 for 14 weeks
• $18.00 per hour for 30 hours a week
