About the Mobile Market
Since May 2016, the Mobile Food Market (MFM) has worked to provide dignified access to healthy and affordable food for communities in Halifax with food access barriers. While everyone is welcome, the MFM aims to address food access issues among vulnerable populations including low-income residents, single parent families, seniors, newcomers to Canada, and those with mobility barriers. The absence of transportation and food infrastructure, such as buses and grocery stores within reasonable proximity, is also a criterion for community selection. Our success hinges on community members and local service agencies playing an active role in the development and hosting of market sites to ensure they meet their unique and diverse needs.
While the MFM initially launched as a pilot project using a retrofitted Halifax Transit bus, the project has since evolved into a year-round program, expanding its core services to include three unique delivery models: Fresh Food Markets, Produce Packs and Bulk Food distribution. The program is sustained by a unique collaborative partnership model composed of the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), Nova Scotia Health - Public Health Central Zone (NSH), and MetroWorks (administrative host organization).
The role of the MFM Senior Manager of Strategic Development is to build the sustainability and responsiveness of the MFM. They will work to diversify funding sources to ensure a robust budget; increase awareness and recognition of the service; and work with partners to explore how the MFM can increase access to healthy & affordable food and better serve our region. The Senior Manager will act as a champion of the MFM across sectors while working collaboratively with partners and staff to build on strengths and expand impact.
