Job Description
Oceans North is a charitable organization that supports marine conservation in partnership with Indigenous and coastal communities. We also engage in ocean management processes at the national and international level.
We are currently seeking a Senior Fisheries Adviser to join the team in our Halifax office. This job includes a competitive salary and excellent benefits.
This is a unique opportunity for an accomplished professional looking to deepen their understanding and engagement in fisheries conservation in Atlantic Canada and the Eastern Arctic, with the potential to engage more broadly on international fisheries issues. Existing knowledge of stock assessment, fisheries management and Indigenous fishing rights is strongly desired. The ideal candidate has at least 5 to 10 years of experience working on Canadian fisheries management processes, including engagement with industry, science and academia, and Indigenous groups. Success in this role will require a scientific background, an ability to analyze the legal and policy implications of fisheries decisions, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. An ability to advocate for conservation and engage with all stakeholders and rightsholders in a given fishery will be key.
The successful applicant will report directly to Susanna Fuller, VP Operations and Projects.
Essential Responsibilities
Participate in science and management meetings for relevant fisheries in Atlantic Canada and the Eastern Arctic.
Develop and submit fisheries recommendations in line with conservation principles, Canadian law and policy, and international commitments.
Work collaboratively with other staff on strategy development and communications materials.
Advance the integration of fisheries and climate change through government engagement at the regional and national level.
Help to create campaign-related reports and analyses that further evidence- and knowledge-based decision making.
Assist where necessary on place-based protections.
Engage proactively with fishing communities, Indigenous governance structures and communities, and the fishing industry.
Experience & Skills:
Graduate degree(s) and/or equivalent experience in fisheries science or management, with an understanding of basic principles of fisheries management in Canada.
At least 5 to 10 years experience in some aspect of fisheries science or management.
Experience with ocean and marine conservation issues preferred.
Strong experience working with Indigenous people and/or small coastal communities.
Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to understand fisheries science and other factors considered in fisheries management.
Comfortable making public statements and interventions at fisheries meetings.
Strong commitment to producing measurable results.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience working with diverse outreach targets such as non-profits, the commercial fishing industry, and Indigenous communities.
Strong systems skills including standard Microsoft Office products.
Highly collaborative, with excellent interpersonal skills and an appreciation for a multi-disciplinary team approach.
Ability to communicate in an Indigenous language or French a benefit, but not a requirement.
