Position: Coordinator - PEI Invasive Species Council
Organization: PEI Invasive Species Council, PEI Watershed Alliance
Location: Prince Edward Island (may be homebased but will include some travel/field work)

DEADLINE EXTENSION – May 14th, 5 p.m.
Duration: Fulltime, 42 weeks until March, 2022 (possibility of extension based on funding)
Hours: 37.5/week
Salary: $21-$23/hour, based on experience
Start Date: May 31, 2021 (at the latest)

About Us:

The PEI Invasive Species Council (PEIISC) is a non-profit group of individuals and organizations focused on creating a framework for the management of invasive species that threaten PEIs economic, environmental, and social health.

The PEI Watershed Alliance (PEIWA) is a non-profit cooperative association of watershed management groups on Prince Edward Island with the overall goal of improving and protecting the environmental quality of Prince Edward Island watersheds, for the benefit of all Island residents.

Job Description & Responsibilities:

This position will help build sustainable capacity for PEIISC and assist PEIWA in carrying out important work that will move invasive species initiatives forward and benefit rural and urban forests, species at risk, the health of PEI forests as well as raise public knowledge and awareness on invasive species (IS).

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to coordinate local projects and initiatives while working to prevent the spread and impact of invasive species resulting in a more resilient forested landscape.

Specific responsibilities include: 
• Research and write strategic funding applications
• Plan and coordinate the delivery of several projects from beginning to end, including budget, finals reports, etc.
• Track and report on project activities to PEIISC and PEIWA contact person/persons. Provide project update/summary at board meetings
• Supervise other PEIISC staff (if needed)
• Plan and coordinate invasive species workshops/educational opportunities and events related to PEI’s forested landscape
• Increase collaboration with stakeholders through activities such as organizing webinars, events, and meetings
• Work with the PEIWA to provide educational opportunities to watershed groups and Indigenous conservation groups, and develop demonstration sites for IS removal
• Develop best management practices for priority invasive species across PEI, including the movement of soils and fill
• Engage with the horticulture industry on invasive plants and promoting native species
• Explore opportunities to support the existing “Don’t Move Firewood” initiative – movement of recreational firewood and raw logs/wood products
• Partner with municipalities and the Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) on reducing the spread of invasive species
• Build on existing Early Detection Rapid Response work
• Work towards the standardization and consolidation of reporting, tracking, data storage and mapping of invasive species on PEI
• Support, coordinate and manage educational efforts of the PEIISC. Raise awareness to motivate target audiences to prevent the spread of invasive species in general and in our forested landscape. Develop educational resources
• Revitalize the PEI Spotters Network. Raise the awareness of invasive species in the general public and encourage reporting activities
• Continue to build a web and social media presence for PEIISC and increase awareness of invasive species

Qualifications and Skills: 
• Graduated from a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum of a 2-year diploma or degree in a field of study related to natural resources/environmental sciences, or equivalent work experience
• Understanding of environmental sciences related to invasive species and their management as well as forest ecosystems
• Knowledge of federal and provincial environmental legislation, regulatory approaches, related to invasive species and forests
• Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders (e.g., Indigenous partners, municipalities, environmental non-profits, industry, volunteers etc.) and have good conflict resolution skills
• Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills. Experience applying for funding and grants is an asset
• Strong computer and social media skills
• Attention to detail and superior organizational skills
• Creative problem solver, quick learner, ability to consider a variety of viewpoints
• High energy and passion for the organization's mission
• Curious and self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
• Able to work occasional weekends and weekday evenings
• Valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle
