Hello Sust-Mar!

I’m off tonight to Glasgow for the climate summit with the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom delegation. I’m bringing pins, banners and leaflets “Demilitarize, Decarbonize, Decolonize” and “NATO is a Climate Criminal”. You can follow us at @WILPFCOP26

I wanted to share with you some important resources related to climate, peace & women. If you aren’t aware of the Climate Action Network Canada’s briefing for COP entitled “A Manifesto for Resistance” I encourage you to read it, I listed it below. I’m also involved in the Women Gender Constituency of the UNFCCC. They have a briefing on the Gender Action Plan for climate and are using the hashtag #FeministClimateJustice – please see the PDF for the briefing and more info below.

Further below is a list of all the events (some virtual) related to climate & peace at COP. I have been involved in the international working group on Arms, Militarism and Climate Justice. Tomorrow, Nov. 4, there is a big press conference to push the UNFCCC to take military emissions and expenditures into account and the petitions signed by tens of thousands of people around the world will be delivered. We are using the hashtag #NoWarNoWarming – please can you retweet posts tomorrow to help us get that hashtag to trend?

Below that is 15 upcoming webinar for Canada and a petition to sign.

Finally, Ottawa Citizen journalist David Pugliese and the CBC have released some very troubling reports and new information about racism and sexual violence in the Canadian military, see his articles here: https://ottawacitizen.com/author/davidpugliese2 and this latest one from the CBC: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/army-hateful-conduct-racism-1.6234699?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar

Remember, November 6 is the UN Day for the Prevention of the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict: https://www.un.org/en/observances/environment-in-war-protection-day

November 11 is Remembrance Day: to remember is to work for peace.

November 21 WILPF is doing a report back on COP 26 with a focus on women, feminist peace & climate. More details to come.

In solidarity for peace, earth and justice,
Tamara

WEBINAR: THE FUTURE OF THE NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION TREATY (NPT) AFTER 50 YEARS?
Thursday, 4th November
11:00 am ET / 16:00 – 17:30 CEST
Register: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_6Js6RFt4RSWmlzOTQjwjAg
The Multilateral Dialogue of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation in Vienna, together with Atomic Reporters, invites you to an online discussion on The Future of the Non-Proliferation Treaty after 50 years? The NPT entered into force on 5 March 1970; it was extended indefinitely in force on 11 May 1995. The Treaty is the most successful and the most widely adhered to multilateral legally binding instrument governing nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear disarmament and cooperation in the peaceful
uses of nuclear energy – the “three pillars” of the Treaty. The NPT Review Conferences have been held every five years since 1970 – the ones in 1995, 2000 and 2010 resulted in agreements by consensus on various measures across the three pillars, especially on nuclear disarmament. The NPT review process is the only forum where the five nuclear-weapon States – China, France, Russia, UK and US – engage substantively on nuclear disarmament. The 2020 NPT Review Conference was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and now is scheduled for 4-28 January 2022. Given worsening relations between competing nuclear-armed States, ongoing nuclear weapons modernization, nuclear disarmament at a standstill, and non-proliferation challenges, what lies ahead for the NPT after fifty years: will it survive, will it muddle along or will it be supplemented by additional measures? These and related matters will be the subject of discussion among senior diplomats covering nuclear governance matters.
Panellists: Gustavo Zlauvinen: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary (Argentina). President-designate
of the Tenth NPT Review Conference (scheduled for January 2022). Tariq Rauf: is on the Board of Directors of Atomic Reporters; he is former Head of Verification & Security Policy Coordination, Alternate Head of the NPT
Delegation, International Atomic Energy Agency; and was a member of the Eminent Persons Group for Substantive Progress on Nuclear Disarmament convened by the Foreign Minister of Japan.

WEBINAR: “WORLD ON FIRE: UNFCCC AND GLOBAL INACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE”
November 4 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Register: https://www.balsillieschool.ca/event/global-insights-world-on-fire-unfccc-and-global-inaction-on-climate-change/
According to the latest UN Framework Convention on Climate Change report (UNFCCC 2021), planet Earth is in dire trouble. The combined effort of the international community’s nationally determined contributions (NDCs) set during COP21’s 2015 ‘Paris Agreement’ falls far short of meeting emissions-reductions targets to prevent a significant rise in global mean temperature. As the dangerous effects of climate warming appear faster and more furiously than expected, what can states do to make a significant impact in combating and mitigating this existential challenge? Is mitigation and adaptation viable options, or are forever going to be ‘running to stand still?’ Organized by the Balsillie School of International Affairs: https://www.balsillieschool.ca/

ANTI-WAR EVENTS -OPPOSE 13TH ANNUAL HALIFAX INTERNATIONAL SECURITY FORUM -NOVEMBER 19-20, 2021
Webinar
Friday November 19 - 8 p.m. Atlantic time
More details to come, email: allan.halifax at gmail.com<mailto:allan.halifax at gmail.com>
The 13th Annual Halifax International Security Forum will be held November 19-21st in Halifax, NS. According to the organizers they plan to have all their participants in person at the Westin Hotel for the fully vaccinated Forum.
The HISF is a U.S. organization hosted by Canada’s Minister of National Defence. It proudly announces it "receives generous support from the Government of Canada and Club HFX."
At this time, the Security Forum is part and parcel of the U.S. and NATO's "pivot to Asia." Last year it rolled out its anti-China stance by issuing a "Handbook for Democracies" titled: "China vs Democracy: The Greatest Game. President, Peter Van Praagh said , "We know what we are for; and we know what we are against. This is how (the Security Forum) differs from all other conferences of similar stature."
This year two of the eight Plenary Sessions and at least three of the Informal Sessions are directly related to China while a number of other sessions are indirectly related. All of it grows the danger of war in the Asia Pacific and on the world scale.
Besides the Plenary and Informal Sessions the Security Forum prides itself for providing the venue for international defense and security "leaders" to meet behind closed doors to plan further crimes against the peace and the peoples of the world. "There is no substitute for face-to-face, in-person conversations between international defense and security leaders. They lead to collaboration, innovative solutions, and renewed hope for our democracies," said Van Praagh.
The agenda purports to deal with global security issues but it does so not from the perspective of the peaceful resolution of conflicts and promotion of international rule of law by upholding the UN Charter. On the contrary, it promotes  a U.S. "rules-based international order" which it calls democracy despite its aim to make the entire world submit to the U.S. declaration that it is the "indispensable nation" which every country must obey. Oppose the HISF: https://halifaxtheforum.org/

Anti-war activists in Halifax urge you to get involved in opposing the Security Forum and making sure Canada provides No Harbour For War and gets out of NATO and NORAD.
No Harbour For War advocates the prevention and resolution of conflicts in accordance with international law and the UN Charter. It opposes the use of force, threats and sanctions to subjugate countries. It calls on Canadians to oppose Canada's integration into the U.S. war machine, NATO and NORAD and the usurpation of Canada's decision-making and sovereignty by the U.S. All foreign and military policy should be decided in a manner which favours the peoples of the world.
Join a webinar on Friday November 19 to hear speakers discuss what's at stake for Canada and the Asia Pacific at this time. Participate in actions to oppose the warmongering Canada is sponsoring by hosting the HSIF.
We call on Canadians to demand that the HISF be banned, along with demanding that Canada get out of NATO and NORAD and that they be dismantled. No foreign troops should be permitted to operate on Canadian territory and Canadian forces should be brought home. No foreign warships, whether armed with nuclear weapons or not, should be permitted to use our harbours. NATO sponsored think tanks and academic institutions should be dismantled. Promotion of imperialist war aims and the militarization of culture must be rejected.
