WEBINAR: “Pipelines Around the World”
Oct 6 at 7:30 ET.
John Foster, retired petroleum engineer and author of “Oil & World Politics”
Organized by the Canadian International Council (Edmonton and Nipissing). The talk is free and open to the public.
Register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_7ABWfNKbSlGInfFtfCFm9w
More info: https://thecic.org/event/cic-edmonton-cic-nipissing-pipeline-politics-around-the-world/
The topic theme is the role of petroleum in ongoing tensions and rivalries between the United States, Russia and China. The US, world’s hegemon for thirty years, aims to contain the rise of Russia and China. Petroleum politics are part of the story, e.g. Nord Stream 2 and Xinjiang. Facing a hostile America, China and Russia have formed a strategic partnership, with both countries investing heavily in pipelines. Since 9/11, Western countries have launched military interventions and imposed sanctions on one petroleum country after another, even China and Russia. None has been successful. Why does Canada support these actions?

WEBINAR: “Struggle for Climate Justice: Post Election Tasks & Perspectives”
Weds. Oct. 6 (9PM ET / 6PM PT)
Register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_1oFxXLnmRN2T1QJLAoTVqQ

During the federal election in Canada, it was startling how major political parties were able to continue to ignore the climate crisis that is all around us. Party platforms and the debates barely gave lip-service to the climate disaster and the immediate action required to restore the delicate balance with mother earth. Meanwhile, movements across Canada continue to confront resource extraction projects, demand divestment from oil and gas corporations, and organize in defense of the rights of Indigenous peoples. And the divide between the status-quo environmental policies of the government of Canada and the people of Canada is growing.
Join Climate Convergence and climate justice organizers across Canada as we discuss building the climate justice movement and how we move forward together to create the better, just, and sustainable world. A better world is possible! We say system change not climate change!
SPEAKERS:
JENNIFER NATHAN – A teacher with a Science degree in Biology and a Masters of Education who has worked in formal and informal science education. She was arrested in 2018 after peacefully disobeying an injunction relating to the construction of the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion and raised the common law defence of necessity in a lengthy legal case.
THOMAS DAVIES – A founding member of Climate Convergence. Unionized Pipefitter and Power Engineer. Author of “System Change Not Climate Change” (Battle of Ideas Press, 2019).
TAMARA LORINCZ – A PhD candidate at Balsillie School of International Affairs (Wilfrid Laurier University), co-founder of the East Coast Environmental Law Association, Fellow at the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute (CFPI) and Board Member of the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace.
Also featuring speakers from THE SUSTAINABILITEENS and PROTECT THE PLANET STOP TMX!
Event will be chaired by ALISON BODINE & RORI SATYA, Climate Convergence organizers.

VIRTUAL ROUNDTABLE: "Does the government have the right to deceive the public? What does the murder of activist Mariano Abarca in Chiapas, México say about Canadian government accountability?"
Oct 5, 2021 03:00 PM in Montreal
Organized by Mining Watch Canada
Register: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_onB8gOJ6Sr-Oyw83mODXZQ?fbclid=IwAR3rRPh4bYGBiEb9K1Ss0znVu1tJwrg3205AnDCqXOd-K1-7np1d42qDsz8
One might think that public servants are obliged to follow policies and procedures that Canadian government officials testify to in Parliament or publish on the government’s website. But a recent Federal Court ruling says this is not necessarily so. That case is currently before the Federal Court of Appeal.
With support from Mexican and Canadian organizations, the family of environmental defender Mariano Abarca, who was murdered in 2009, is seeking an investigation into the Canadian Embassy in Mexico. They believe that the Embassy’s unconditional lobbying in support of a Canadian mining company put Mariano’s life in greater danger in the lead up to his murder.
This roundtable will discuss Canadian practice when it comes to embassies abroad and conflicts over Canadian mining operations, asking whether Mariano’s case is the pattern or an exception. We will also explore what policy Canadian officials should be expected to follow in such cases, and how Canada’s human rights obligations are fulfilled. Finally, do we have any way to hold public officials to account when things go wrong?
Moderator: Bianca Mugyenyi, Director, Canadian Foreign Policy Institute
1st hour: economic diplomacy
• Representative of the Abarca family from Chicomuselo, Chiapas, Mexico
• Charis Kamphuis, Justice and Corporate Accountability Project
• Jen Moore, Global Economy Program, Institute for Policy Studies

2nd hour: approaches to enforcement
Reflections of expert panel
• Ketty Nivyabandi, Secretary-General, Amnesty International Canada
• Representative of Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights
• David Yazbek, Lawyer, Centre for Freedom of Expression
Reflections of Soledad García Muñoz, IACHR Special Rapporteur on Economic, Social, Cultural, and Environmental Rights

WEBINAR: “FEMINIST RESISTANCE: MILITARISM AND CLIMATE CHANGE”
Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at 10 am ET (7am PT and 4pm CEST)
Organized by the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF).
Register here: https://bit.ly/3luyESp
Speakers: Margrethe Kvam (WILPF Norway and International Board Vice-President), Tamara Lorincz (WILPF Canada), Edwick Madzimure (President WILPF Zimbabwe), Ida Arneson (WILPF Sweden), Heidi Meinzolt (WILPF Germany and Europe Regional Representative, WILPF International Board)
Moderated by Katrin Geyer of Reaching Critical Will, WILPF’s disarmament programme, the webinar will feature speakers from WILPF Sections in Canada, Sweden, Zimbabwe, Germany, and Norway who will each share perspectives on the issues from their region and feminist solutions to the militarism and climate change nexus.

The recent IPCC report has made the world strikingly aware that the current rate of climate change is a ‘code red for humanity’. Yet, the role of the military as the world’s single greatest emitter in use of fossil fuels is sorely overlooked in traditional environment discussions. How can we raise awareness about this connection and address the role of militarism as a root cause of climate change? What are the connections between climate action, feminism, and peace? As we begin the road to COP26, join WILPF members from Germany, Sweden, Norway, Canada and Zimbabwe as they discuss the situation in their region and share how they are mobilising feminist values to campaign for an end to militarism and towards climate justice, from the grassroots to the international level. Organized by the Women's International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF).
