Job Vacancy: Senior Researcher & Writer
Organization: Greenpeace Canada 
Location: Anywhere in Canada. We have offices in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. Currently, our staff are working from home due to the pandemic.

Reports to: Head of Media
Details: Full time, 2 year contract, union (Four day work week, Monday to Thursday, 28 hours/week)
Salary: $59,343 CAD per year (this amount will be prorated for partial years of service)

What you'll be working on:

More than ever before people in Canada understand and accept the need to transition away from fossil fuels. 66% of Canadians want to see governments do more to reduce carbon emissions and 51% believe we need to greatly slow or stop the development of oil and gas [1]. We have the technology and ability to make this much needed transition happen. However, through well-funded PR, lobbying, and sponsorships, the fossil fuel industry maintains a strong influence - consistently pushing for slower and weaker climate action.

Greenpeace Canada wants to increasingly expose the negative role the fossil fuel industry is playing in our national conversation on climate change. From our politics, to our cultural institutions, to our communities - this work will shed light on fossil fuel industry influence, how it works, and how it is impacting our ability to act on climate change. This role would be focused on delivering work that empowers the public with information that exposes fossil fuel industry influence where it is having the most detrimental impact.

About the role:

We are looking to recruit a talented and experienced researcher and writer to join our team who has a track record of breaking stories that inform people in Canada on the role of fossil fuels.

As a Senior Researcher and Writer you would perform and conduct detailed and in-depth research related to Canada’s fossil fuel industry and its lobbying activities, public relations strategies, financiers, and connections to governments.

You would help build Greenpeace’s reputation for credible research and investigations. You would champion high research and journalistic standards and employ a range of investigative tools and resources, and would publish stories regularly based on your findings.

You would define, develop, and implement research processes, guidelines, standards, and protocols and reporting standards

Responsibilities
• Lead Greenpeace Canada’s investigations and research strategy related to climate change.
• Break powerful stories which grab national media attention.
• Understand news values and news agendas, and can, therefore, tailor climate-related research work output to maximize impact.
• Maintain the highest professional journalistic standards as a researcher and respect Greenpeace Canada’s credible communication policy.
• Responsible for project managing investigations: Initiating, developing and delivering researches that deliver on Greenpeace's objectives including building our reputation as a credible source of news and investigations and bringing about positive environmental change.
• Initiate, maintain and develop beneficial contacts with sources and experts outside of Greenpeace.
• Work with and advise colleagues to turn the stories into powerful online - and potentially offline - content that helps expand and mobilize the climate movement.

Requirements
• For this role we are looking for someone with solid experience of researching and delivering stories through research, using sources, FOI requests and/or data analysis. Someone who can identify, develop and deliver high-impact stories. In addition, we are aiming for someone with experience identifying and working on public interest investigative stories – or strands of stories – which hold power to account with facts and supports efforts to bring about change.
• Who would be great at reporting on complex and challenging issue areas, including experience of quickly building up knowledge of such a beat.
• Who would be able to demonstrate substantial experience project managing research – including working with freelancers, project management tools, time management and publication timelines involving multiple people and/or providers. Demonstrable experience of leading or working collaboratively within teams in developing and delivering investigations would definitely be an asset.
• Who has a strong understanding of media narratives, how they come to be and how they develop over time. Someone who knows how to build and pitch stories and edit them to a high standard.
• Who has a good understanding of journalistic codes of practice.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in either English or French
• Ability to execute research in both English and French
• Knowledge of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis languages are highly desirable
• Knowledge of other languages that reflect the diversity of Canada’s many communities are also highly desirable

You will work with colleagues across Canada and collaborate with other Greenpeace offices around the world.

Candidates should understand and support the Greenpeace campaign tactics, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience.
