Position: Natural Areas Stewardship Technician
Organization: Island Nature Trust
Location: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island
Island Nature Trust is Prince Edward Islands oldest private charitable land trust, protecting natural lands and waters for wildlife and people in perpetuity. We are a membership-based organization directed by a volunteer board and supported by a small contingent of dedicated staff. There is currently an opportunity to join our team as a Natural Areas Stewardship Technician.
About the Position
The successful candidate will assist in stewarding Island Nature Trusts Natural Areas, while occasionally working with volunteers and the public. Island Nature Trust owns and manages over 60 Natural Areas across PEI, from Nail Pond to North Lake to Wood Islands, and has a network of volunteers that help to protect and steward these special places.
The successful candidate will be supervised by the Land Stewardship Program Manager under the direction of the Executive Director. They will assist with all aspects of Natural Area stewardship including monitoring the properties and conducting fieldwork, recording, and managing biological data, invasive species management, tree planting, trail maintenance, and project reporting.
Primary Responsibilities & Duties:
Conducting fieldwork within INT Natural Areas (biodiversity monitoring, removal of illegal dumpsites, trail maintenance, tree planting, invasive species monitoring and management, general monitoring)
Field data collection & management
Secondary Responsibilities & Duties:
Serving as a point of contact for occasional restoration projects
Engaging in conservation volunteer events and public engagement
Assisting in other facets of the Trust. Occasionally helping Species-at-Risk staff in annual census counts, summer monitoring/data collection efforts, and ArcGIS mapping
Responding to calls of concern regarding disturbances within INT Natural Areas
Submitting reports and presenting compiled data in an informative way
Preparing media content for newsletters, website, public engagement etc.
Requirements:
Education
Essential: At least one year of post-secondary training in a conservation-related or environmental discipline
Experience
Essential: Experience conducting field work in various weather conditions and terrains, sometimes by watercraft, would be considered a strong asset but is not mandatory
Desirable: Experience working with environmental non-government organizations
Desirable: Experience working with species at risk and/or birds
Desirable: Experience working with and managing geographic data and GPS devices
Skills
Essential: Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher software, along with database management skills
Essential: Strong written and oral communication
Essential: English mandatory, French working knowledge would be considered an asset
Essential: Ability to work cooperatively as part of a dynamic team, and adapting quickly to changes or new situations
Knowledge
Essential: Experience conducting auditory bird surveys
Essential: Knowledge of PEI ecosystems and challenges to land or species conservation
Essential: Knowledge of Acadian forest plant identification
Personal Attributes
Essential: An outgoing personality and comfortable with public outreach
Essential: Ability to maintain a positive attitude and friendly demeanor, even during long or tiring fieldwork days
Essential: A commitment to the mission and values of INT
Essential: Must be willing to occasionally work extended hours outside in all kinds of weather
Essential: Physically fit and able to walk several kms each day on uneven terrain
Terms of Employment:
This position is offered as a full-time contract (37.5 hours/week) to December 30, 2022, with possibility of extension subject to funding availability
This position is based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island but will require occasionally working with INT staff and volunteers at locations elsewhere in the province
Starting salary is $20/hour, depending on experience, inclusive of vacation
A criminal record check required (upon offer of a position)
Must be an Atlantic Canadian resident and a Canadian Citizen or able to legally work in Canada
Valid drivers license and reliable vehicle are a requirement
