Regional Organizer (Atlantic)

Summary
Under the general direction of the Director of Organizing and working in close collaboration with other members of staff, the Regional Organizer directly supports chapters and members in local leadership to drive public and corporate policy campaigns through inclusive processes that develop their organizing and advocacy skills, generates bold actions, moves policy makers and educates the public. Regional Organizers work as members of the Councils Political Team and share responsibility across staff to ensure the health of the organization and to accomplish organizational goals.
This position is deeply relational and strategic, emphasizing capacity and leadership of Council chapters and members in the respective region and across regions. It requires a commitment to people-led political change, a willingness to take risks, and building common cause across diverse experiences and perspectives. Successful candidates will show a willingness to develop new skills and learn alongside others with the organization.
Major Responsibilities
Percentages below are intended to give an overall picture of workload and priorities. Day to day duties will change according to the annual calendar and operational needs.
1. Direct organizing with chapters and members. (65%)
Identifying resources, designing and facilitating capacity-building workshops, support and/or facilitation through the full cycle of campaign planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Track relevant provincial and regional legislative and political changes, identifying strategic opportunities for interventions and supporting chapters and members as they leverage those opportunities through direct communications and meetings with political leadership, political staff, committees, or other decision-makers.
Direct organizing support at key campaign moments and connecting chapters and members to national office staff in support of their campaigning.
Sustain a regional communications structure to support chapter-to-chapter support, organizing and knowledge-sharing. This will include monthly regional meetings and one Annual Regional Meeting.
Strategic outreach to regional members, creating opportunities to onboard into Council organizing through independent campaign engagement or planning, or chapter participation, formation and closures as needed. Responding to relevant complex member requests.
2. Strategic coalition participation (10%):
Represent the Council of Canadians to regional organizations and partners including unions, civil society, grassroots movements, Indigenous communities, and others.
Representing the Council of Canadians at public actions, both Council-led and partner-led, and always supporting chapter participation.
3. Communications support (10%):
Work with national communications staff to identify regional communications needs and opportunities.
Public education: media engagement, blog writing, and public speaking.
Resource development: In collaboration with communications, provide input on website and campaign materials, drafting materials for regional campaigns, social media content, etc.
4. Organizational planning and reporting (15%)
Contribute to an environment of respect, collegiality and professionalism within the work environments.
Utilize tact, discretion and judgement at all times, including within the Councils teams and with external partners, allies, and stakeholders.
Contribute to cross-team projects, including development projects related to the region, working groups and campaigns while building a rapport with colleagues from other teams.
Participate in the planning and implementation of the Councils long-term and annual plans and strategies.
Participate in regular joint work planning and work plan review sessions and annual performance evaluations.
Participate in team meetings to coordinate work, resolve operational issues and ensure harmonious relations amongst team members.
Contribute to the preparation of reports to the (Co-)Executive Director(s) and the rest of the organization as required.
Submit monthly expense reports and reconciliations, assist in managing administration and budgets, maintain working files, participate in hiring committees as requested.
Position Qualifications
The minimum qualifications for this position are:
Commitment to the Council's values, vision and directions
At least five years of experience in grassroots organizing or campaigning, or a relevant degree and/or lived experiences
Demonstrated experience with in-person and online workshop development and facilitation
Experience in policy research and analysis, including direct engagement with legislative offices and political decision-makers
Demonstrated experience working with broad coalitions on a shared goal and accountability; understanding of and ability to work with group dynamics
Excellent communication, facilitation, conflict resolution and persuasion skills; ability to empathize and connect with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives
Strong knowledge of current regional economic, social and political issues
Demonstrated project management experience with an ability to prioritize and effectively handle competing demands
Capacity to work in a self-directed manner as part of a distributed team
Strong computer skills, including virtual meeting tools and participatory virtual meeting facilitation
Preferred candidates will also demonstrate a combination of the following qualifications:
Experience working with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
Experience with media engagement and public speaking
Experience working across the various provinces and territories within the respective region
Fluency in more than one language relevant to the respective region
Location
This position is based in St. Johns, NL or Charlottetown, PEI or Fredericton, NB or Halifax NS; however other locations within the Atlantic region could be considered. Additionally, this position will be required to work from home.
This is a full-time (35 hours/week) term position until May 30, 2023. Pay scale starting at $69,333 (Classification 5) per year.
