Position: Market Gardener
Employer: Richmond River Roots Market Garden Society / Dr. Kingston Memorial Community Health Centre

Location: River Bourgeois, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
Housing: On-site accommodations are available if needed.

We are seeking market gardeners for two full-time, seasonal (with potential for year-round) positions to work at our market garden site located in River Bourgeois, Cape Breton.

The Richmond River Market Garden sits on approximately two acres of land, and has a high tunnel and geothermal greenhouse. There are plenty of opportunities to use eco-friendly methods of cultivation throughout the planting and harvesting seasons, and an opportunity to learn about selling and storing produce. There is also access to online information/courses and books related to market gardening.

Some gardening experience is required. Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather and in a team environment are a requirement. On-site accommodations are available if needed.

Market Gardener Position
Richmond River Roots Market Garden

(37.5 hrs/ wk; flexible hours; $16.00/hr)

Employer: Richmond River Roots Market Garden Society
Address: 403 Church Point Rd, River Bourgeois, B0E 2X0 (company location and worksite)

Reports to the Project Developer who will help to ensure all Richmond River Roots Market Garden employees and volunteers work together as a team.

Responsibilities:
• Plan garden with Project Developer as directed by the Board
• Plan daily/weekly tasks with Project Developer
• Assist Project Developer in assigning tasks to students and volunteers
• Assist Project Developer with overseeing the work of students and volunteers
• Participate in all aspects of the garden project (ground prep to harvesting, selling and storage)
• Participate in the accomplishment of the project objectives
• Assist with Farmer’s Markets
• Conduct garden tours
• Assist with education endeavours of the project
• Help to maintain equipment
• Help to ensure grounds are presentable
• Assist with day-to-day care and maintenance of the gardens and greenhouses
• Undertake minor repairs as determined by Project Developer
• Assist with general garden carpentry such as assembling and maintaining furniture, replacing handles and similar hardware.
• Assist with general minor painting & decorating to maintain garden appearance
• Comply with agreed codes, legislation, and procedures including health and safety
• Maintain accurate records/documentation associated with work
• Immediately report problems/failures that may impact on the organisation and/or its visitors, clients/customers to Project Developer
• Meet targets and contribute to those of the team as a whole
• Adhere to all organisation policies and procedures
• Identify hazards, defects and the need for repair
• Responsibly use resources and control expenses to operate within budgetary controls
