Hiring: Climate and Oceans Campaigner
Organization: Oceans North
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

Oceans North is an environmental charity that supports marine conservation and ocean-climate action in partnership with Indigenous and coastal communities across Canada, Western Greenland and the High Seas.

We are currently seeking a Climate and Oceans Campaigner to focus on building solutions to marine emissions and more broadly to help advance the transition from fossil fuel use in the maritime sector towards zero emission fuels and technologies.

The ideal candidate is a well-organized, motivated, self-starter who can work independently and as part of a team; ideally has a blend of expertise in ship building, ports, and Canada’s climate commitments; ability to effectively communicate with communities, elected officials, and Indigenous organizations; and is passionate about developing enabling public policy that can help advance tangible solutions to the impacts climate change is having on our oceans.

The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Oceans North’s Director of Marine Climate Action. Oceans North offers a competitive salary, excellent benefits, flexible work hours and understands the importance of work life balance.

This is a new position. The successful applicant must be comfortable helping to define and build this role within Oceans North.

Essential Duties:
• Help build and maintain new coalitions of actions that seek to mitigate marine emissions
• Effectively liaise with municipal, provincial, federal, and Indigenous governments.
• Work effectively as a member of a team in an outcome driven organization.
• Ability to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends.
• Conduct policy research and analysis on climate and oceans policy issues related to maritime decarbonization
• Support grant development and reporting.
• Support the development and execution of climate and oceans campaigns that work towards a net-zero ocean economy in Canada.

Experience & Skills:
• Post-secondary education or applicable real-world experience in developing climate, energy, or maritime policy, programs or high-impact projects.
• Experience in the marine sector, with particular knowledge of fishing boats, port infrastructure, marine engineering, or marine systems design, considered an asset.
• Experience planning meetings, events, and issue-based engagements across traditional discrete fields of expertise.
• Clear record of conducting original research, writing and analysis to advance public policy related to environmental, energy, sustainability, or trade issues.
• Ability to speak French or any Indigenous language (preferred).
