Organization: CLIMAtlantic Inc.
Location: virtual, must be in Atlantic Canada
• Pay: $55,000 to $68,000/ year (depending on education, experience)
• Hours: 37.5 hours/ week (flexible)
• Excellent benefits plan

About Us

Climate change is one of the greatest long-term challenges facing the world today. The science is clear and unambiguous: climate change is happening. Climate change and other associated environmental effects are impacting human and ecosystem wellbeing, as well as sectors with obvious climate sensitivities such as forestry, agriculture, fisheries, hydroelectricity, transportation, tourism, insurance, and trade. Geographic location, socioeconomic conditions, and reliance on food from the land converge with climate change to create unique pressures for Indigenous, northern, remote and coastal communities in Canada.

CLIMAtlantic Inc. (climatlantic.ca) is a non-profit organization that is part of a national network of climate services centres (see the Canadian Centre for Climate Services). CLIMAtlantic supports adaptation in the Atlantic region by identifying champions, builds relationships, shares information, leads where necessary and creates a space for all those interested in building resilience to the impacts of climate change.

CLIMAtlantic is playing an increasing role in supporting capacity building around climate change adaptation across the region and in building networks of practitioners that incorporate adaptation in their practice.

About Our Opportunity

This is a 4-year term with CLIMAtlantic. As the Climate Change Adaptation Learning & Training Coordinator, you will be responsible for coordinating climate change adaptation learning and training programs delivered by CLIMAtlantic. This position is primarily virtual but based in Atlantic Canada.

You will work with the CLIMAtlantic team, project partners, as well as adaptation specialists from across the region, including the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC). You will play an important role as a team member at CLIMAtlantic, as the coordinator of online and in-person learning programs, and as the lead of a community of practice.

The successful applicant will apply both technical knowledge and their unique perspectives to the work. Climate change adaptation crosses many disciplines, so the position requires knowledge, awareness, and/or ability to learn about different knowledge systems. Similarly, adaptation requires a broad skill set. Understanding which skills need to be developed and how they relate to advancing adaptation in the region will also be key.

Broad Responsibilities

Within this role, you must be mindful of the broader impact of the work and how it is approached, and you will be responsible for, but work collaboratively in achieving the following:
• Update and maintain existing online climate change adaptation learning modules to create an adaptation learning curriculum for adaptation practitioners in the region.
• Coordinate the delivery of the online and in-person adaptation curriculum to practitioners in community, sectoral, or environmental organizations, municipalities, Indigenous communities, or provincial or federal government.
• Manage online curriculum and learning resources through a learning management system or other platform.
• Work with partners to identify internship opportunities to accompany the climate adaptation curriculum.
• Organize other in-person learning and networking events to complement the online training.
• Identify gaps and opportunities in existing climate change adaptation training resources, including both skills and information
• Work with a regional advisory team to develop new learning opportunities to meet these needs.
• Establish connections to reach targeted audiences and communicate the training opportunity.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of a monitoring and evaluation system for the climate adaptation training.
• Leading/supporting a community of practice.
• Project management, fundraising, report writing and partner coordination.

Qualifications and Expertise
• Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Proven expertise and/ or experience in training and mentoring others, and in facilitation, outreach and engagement.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in climate change adaptation is required (and experience preferred).
• Experience in educational design or developing learning modules, managing an online curriculum, is considered an asset.
• Must be creative, self-directed, and organized with a proven track record of working both independently and collaboratively.
• Experience in grant writing, carrying out needs assessments, monitoring and evaluation in experiential learning and more immersive, arts-, and game-based forms of engagement is an asset.
• Ability to apply different perspectives and framings when analyzing a problem, developing a solution, and communicating with others
• Please also identify additional skills not listed which you think could be assets in this role.
