Hiring: Land Stewardship Manager
Organization: Island Nature Trust – Hiring
Location: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Island Nature Trust is Prince Edward Island’s oldest private charitable land trust, protecting natural lands and waters for wildlife and people in perpetuity. We are a membership-based organization directed by a volunteer board and supported by a small contingent of dedicated staff.

About the Position:

The Land Stewardship Manager oversees all aspects of Island Nature Trust’s Land Stewardship work including supervising the Land Stewardship Coordinators and Technicians, while working with and reporting to the Executive Director. Responsibilities include planning and carrying out stewardship and restoration efforts within INT Natural Areas, overseeing the coordination of the Conservation Guardian volunteer program, managing INT’s database of geographic data, conducting public outreach, and contributing to the Trust’s communication plan and activities.

Primary Responsibilities & Duties:
• Planning, scheduling, and implementing regular stewardship activities in INT Natural Areas (biodiversity monitoring and field data collection, invasive species monitoring and management, illegal dumpsite removal, native plantings, trail management, designing and installing signage, general monitoring)
• Planning and overseeing restoration projects and associated permitting
• Writing proposals and reports for various funding requirements
• Training and supervising Land Stewardship Coordinators and Technicians – developing workplans and carrying out performance evaluations
• Overseeing the coordination of the Conservation Guardian volunteer program (training new volunteers, communicating with volunteers and the public, organizing, and distributing resources and training, tracking volunteer reports) and engaging other volunteers from the public or corporate sponsors
• Managing the Land Stewardship team’s geographic data, performing analysis and high-level cartographic requests for both INT and partner organizations

Secondary Responsibilities & Duties:
• Understanding and adhering to provincial NAPA regulations
• Assisting with other facets of INT’s work as requested
• Responding to concerns regarding disturbances within INT Natural Areas
• Communicating with the general public through INT newsletters, social media posts, or news outlets
• Liaising with partner organizations, donors, and supporters
• Working with the Management Team to develop annual workplans and budgets

Requirements:

Education:
• Required: BSc. in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field
• Required: University or college specialization in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) (certificate, degree, etc.)
• Asset: MSc in a related field

Experience:
• Required: 5 years or more experience working in a related environmental field
• Required: Previous experience supervising a small team
• Asset: Previous experience working for an NGO
• Required: Experience conducting fieldwork in varying and sometimes challenging terrain and conditions
• Asset: Demonstrated public speaking, presentation, and writing (both scientific and for public outreach) experience

Skills:
• Required: Wabanaki-Acadian Forest flora & fauna identification, with the ability to identify species at risk, rare species, invasive species, and species of cultural value
• Required: Microsoft Office suite of products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, etc.)
• Required: Ability to work independently and as a team, both in a leadership role and in a helping role
• Required: Class 5 driver's license
• Required: Collecting & manipulating scientific data
• Required: Experience using various geographic software, including ArcPro, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online, StoryMaps, Avenza Maps, and/or Google Earth Pro
• Required: Daily/Weekly/Seasonal time management and scheduling abilities
• Required: Ability to operate & navigate using a handheld GPS unit
• Asset: Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C training
• Asset: Proficiency in French (written and oral)
• Asset: Ability to safely operate a chainsaw and various other power and/or manual tools (Basic Silviculture & Chainsaw Safety training)
• Asset: CABIN Field Assistant Certification
• Asset: WHMIS training
• Asset: Mi’kmaq Cultural Training & other Indigenous Cultural Competency Training
• Asset: Drone Pilot Certificate – Advanced Operations
• Asset: University Certificate in Environmental Impact Assessment
• Asset: Green Shores Certification: Level 1 & 2
• Asset: Climate Change Risk Assessment training
• Asset: Experience with radio telemetry
• Asset: Ability to program and operate autonomous recording units (ARUs)
• Asset: Able to perform long and sometimes tiring fieldwork days
• Asset: DSLR and digital photography skills
• Asset: Training in tree care and planting
• Asset: Experience conducting forestry work and using relevant tools
• Asset: Media training

Working Conditions:

The Land Stewardship Manager will have a balance of office work and fieldwork throughout the year. The person in this position should be prepared to perform fieldwork in a variety of terrains and weather conditions, traveling across the island, sometimes working outside regular working hours and on weekends. Island Nature Trust has a fleet vehicle for the stewardship team to use, however a reliable personal vehicle may be required for work purposes from time to time.

Terms of Employment:
• This is a full-time position (37.5 hours/week) beginning as soon as possible
• This position is based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, but will require working with INT staff at locations across PEI
• Starting salary is $30/hour with stepped increases on an annual basis
• Health and dental benefits provided
• Three weeks' vacation and paid statutory holidays provided
• Supervisory responsibilities of approximately 6 staff (depending on time of year)
• Valid driver’s license required
• Must be a Canadian citizen or able to legally work in Canada
