In this one-hour webinar, Jessica Katzenstein, Postdoctoral Fellow in the Inequality in America Initiative at Harvard University, will present findings from a paper she authored for the Costs of War Project entitled, “Total Information Awareness: The High Costs of Post-9/11 U.S. Mass Surveillance.” She will be joined by Joanna YangQing Derman, Director of Anti-Profiling, Civil Rights and National Security at Asian Americans Advancing Justice and Elizabeth Goitein, Senior Director of the Liberty and National Security Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law to discuss current mass surveillance policy issues. As the war in Ukraine continues to intensify, with the growing danger of a direct U.S. confrontation with Russia, Peace in Ukraine and CODEPINK are launching a new action plan focusing on Congress called: “The Urgency of Pursuing Peace in Ukraine.” We will be asking our elected officials to call for: Ceasefire, Diplomacy, and No More Weapons.
The launch will feature an evening talk including Dr. Cornel West, Co-Executive Director of the People's Forum Claudia De La Cruz CODEPINK, Co-founder Medea Benjamin, journalist Eugene Puryear, and comedian/podcaster Lee Camp, followed the next morning by a National Advocacy Day. While some advocates will be advocating on Capitol Hill, local constituents will be calling in or joining the DC meetings by zoom.

Speaker: Retired Colonel Jacques Baud will discuss his latest book and research about the war in Ukraine. Baud is a former member of strategic intelligence in the Swiss military, a specialist in Eastern Europe and former head of Doctrine of the United Nations Peace Operations. Colonel Baud was engaged in negotiations with top Russian military and intelligence officials right after the fall of the USSR. He was seconded by the Swiss government to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to head NATO’s Small Arms and Light Weapons program in Brussels from 2013 to 2017. Baud was involved in NATO programs in Ukraine, including after the Maidan Revolution of 2014. He is very knowledgeable about the war in Ukraine and is a well-known military analyst in Europe. He is fluent in French, English and German. He is the author of several books on intelligence, war and terrorism, including "Operation Z: The Hidden Truths about the War in Ukraine Revealed," “Putin, Game master?”, “Governing by “Fake News” and “The Navalny Affair”, all published by Max Milo. Our world edges closer and closer to nuclear catastrophe as the U.S. pursues conflicts with Russia and China. Can President Kennedy’s American University Speech on world peace help us redefine what true security means and find a path to achieve it?
During the run-up to war in Iraq, retired Army Colonel and diplomat Ann Wright resigned her State Department post. She was one among dozens of government insiders and active-duty military personnel who leaked documents, spoke out, resigned, or refused to deploy in protest of government actions they felt were illegal. Since then, Ann has been writing and speaking out for peace. She has traveled to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen to talk with families whose family members have been killed by U.S. assassin drones. In 2016, she went on speaking missions to South Korea, Okinawa, Poland, and Russia.
In 2015, Ann went to North Korea with a delegation of 30 women from 15 countries including 2 Nobel Peace Laureates. Ann goes to countries where the U.S. government does not allow us to see the effects of U.S. sanctions, including Iran, Cuba, China, and Russia.
