From tlorincz at dal.ca Wed Nov 5 04:58:40 2025 From: tlorincz at dal.ca (Tamara Lorincz) Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2025 04:58:40 +0000 Subject: [sust-mar] Shameful! It's a war budget that will exacerbate global warming & poverty. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hello Sust-Mar, Canada?s new budget is a dangerous, reckless war budget. It?s budget to prepare for a global war against Russia, China, Iran and Venezuela. It?s also a budget for a class war against women, youth, the poor, and immigrants. You can watch Finance Minister Champagne?s budget speech on CPAC here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GY6Z8pyxwU The full ?Building Canada Strong? budget report at 493-page is here: https://www.budget.canada.ca/2025/report-rapport/pdf/budget-2025.pdf The Carney Liberal government has committed to massively increasing the military budget by an additional $81 billion over the next five years and reaching the NATO 5% GDP target by 2035, which will mean $150 billion/year. It will also establish a defence procurement agency and defence industrial strategy, but did not mention even once ?green economy? or ?care economy?. The federal budget will invest in 1,000 more border guards and 1,000 more RCMP officers and recruit more soldiers. These are male-dominated professions. Military spending is not productive for the economy and not good for women. The federal budget admits that military spending benefits ?majority men? in the gender impacts report in Annex 6. https://www.budget.canada.ca/2025/report-rapport/anx6-en.html#a3 Moreover, the federal government will be investing in new fossil fuel-powered submarines, more combat and surveillance aircraft, greater militarization of the north etc. that will exacerbate the climate crisis. More money on carbon-intensive militarism will make it impossible to decarbonize the reach the Paris Agreement target to stabilize the climate. We are facing catastrophic climate change with tipping points that are already being breached: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/oct/13/coral-reefs-ice-sheets-amazon-rainforest-tipping-point-global-heating-scientists-report Canada?s budget is at odds with the UN. In September, the UN Secretary General released an important report in response to a UN General Assembly request that opposed rising military spending in member states ?The Security We Need: Rebalancing Military Spending for a Sustainable and Peaceful Future?: https://www.un.org/en/peace-and-security/the-true-cost-of-peace Canada has done the exact opposite. There is also no mention of peacekeeping and little peace in Canada?s budget, but NATO is mentioned 26 times, armed force 39 times, and defence 149 times. By contrast, climate change is mentioned 20 times. The federal budget commits funding to reconstruct Ukraine (a proxy war that the US/NATO started) but does not mention reconstructing Gaza/Palestine (all the NATO countries helped arm Israel, a NATO partner, commit a genocide). I also want to mention that the 25th anniversary of UN Security Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security was last month. The UN Secretary General released his report on WPS: https://www.un.org/sexualviolenceinconflict/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/report/united-nations-security-council-women-and-peace-and-security-report-of-the-secretary-general/n2523645-1.pdf *The UN WPS report expressly called for cutting military spending and the last paragraph states: ?women peacebuilders remain at the front lines of all these crises. Their universal message to governments and armed actors is unequivocal: end the wars, respect international law and disarm.? Canada is doing the exact opposite: Canada is arming and planning to wage more war. The Liberal government?s budget is shameful and will worsen poverty, violence, environmental degradation and climate collapse. What I found most despicable is that the loudest cheers and standing ovations from the Liberal bench was when Finance Minister Champagne detailed military spending. Even worse, there is no opposition to this massive increase to military spending by the other political parties. The future for our children and grandchildren is very grim.
