Equity Announces the Stage West Emerging Equity Theatre Artist Award

In October 2002 Canadian Actors' Equity Association will proudly award one of its emerging members with a cheque for $2,000 in recognition of their professionalism, artistic excellence and innovation. The Stage West Award, generously initiated by Stage West Theatre Restaurant in honour of Equity's silver anniversary in 2001, will recognize an Equity member each year for the next decade.

"This award recognizes the valuable asset this country has in young talent. We feel, as one of Canada's largest employers of performers and backstage crew, Stage West has a responsibility to assist and encourage the development of that talent," says Howard Pechet, executive producer of Stage West Theatre Restaurants.

The award will be given to a theatre artist who has been a member of the association for less than three years and will be adjudicated by Equity's honours committee, comprised of elected councilors and advisory members.

Award Criteria

- The award will be given to an Equity theatre artist who has been a member of the association for less than three years. For 2002, the artist will have joined after January 1st, 1999.
- The artist must demonstrate: professionalism, artistic excellence and innovation within their craft.
- Qualifying artists must be full-members of Canadian Actors' Equity Association in good standing.

Application Process

Artists may either place their own names in nomination; be nominated by another Equity member or a theatre.

Each application must include the following:

- Artist's résumé
- A one-page letter of support from a theatre professional, such as an Equity member, theatre manager or playwright
- Applicant's full address, e-mail and telephone number, and the address and telephone number of the supporting theatre professional.
- Applications may also include additional documentation to a maximum of five pages. No video will be accepted. Please do not send original documents, materials submitted cannot be returned.
- Applications must be received by August 31st, 2002.
- The decision of the selection committee is final.
