ACTING IS JOB 1 AT NEW IMPROV STUDIO

Collective raises the bar with multi-disciplinary training approach to
studying the art and craft of improvisational acting

TORONTO — The stage craft of improvisation is rarely referred to as an art
form, most likely because it takes a master craftsman to be an artist. At
least, that's the thinking behind the Impatients Training Initiative's "Work
hard. Study hard. Play hard." philosophy to improv.

"We don’t teach performance games," says Kevin Patrick Robbins, director of
the training centre. "I believe the main difference between good improv and
bad improv is good acting. Game-based improv tends to lean towards the
improviser as indicator; scene-based improv, which we teach, focuses on the
improviser as an actor."

The majority of improv’s modern reputation stems from the public's and the
media's limited exposure to TV shows like the BBC’s Whose Line Is It
Anyways?, TNN's Lifegame, or the Comedy Network's Improv: Heaven and Hell.
But improv isn't limited to comedy.

"It’s not about trying to be funny, that'll happen on its own. For us, it’s
about being truthful to the characters and their relationships and
maintaining the integrity of the scene and the play as a whole. Some of the
best improvised scenes are very moving and deal with real drama. It's about
integrity."

And it doesn't stop there. The five-level Mechanics of Improvisation
training program is focused on teaching the craft of improvisation using
modern exercises and techniques. The no-nonsense approach to teaching
enables student improvisers to develop at an accelerated rate. It tackles
elements of narrative structure, non-verbal communication, and personal
empowerment, implementing the Impatients' own techniques as well as those of
Del Close, Mick Napier and Sanford Meisner.

The ITI has already held highly successful weekend intensives and master
classes with Joe Bill and Mark Sutton of Chicago's famous Annoyance Theatre.
The ITI plans to offer elective courses outside of the foundation Mechanics
series that will include Advanced Storytelling, Intensive Character
Development, Genre Studies, and Improv Singing.

THE MECHANICS OF IMPROV WORKSHOP SERIES

The Mechanics of Improv series is an intensive study of the foundations of
improvisation. Unlike other approaches to improv teaching, Impatients
training is aggressive in its instruction, pushing its students to learn and
discover the best within themselves.

The program is focused on teaching the craft of improvisation using modern
exercises and techniques. Our no-nonsense approach to teaching enables our
student improvisers to develop at an accelerated rate. Instruction is
focused on informing students "what they can do" instead of "what they
should not do."

This series is the core study component of the ITI. Because of our unique
focus and approach to teaching improv, all students, regardless of
experience, begin in Mechanics Level 1.
