A new Canadian musical, Whiskey Serenade is the story of Rocco Perri and
Bessie Starkman, the king and queen of the Canadian underworld. Perri,
the son of Italian immigrants, was raised in the mob neighborhoods of
Hamilton before finding his way to Toronto in a desperate search for
work. Raised in abject poverty, his ambition would ultimately lead him
to create a substantial criminal network, earning him the nickname King
of the Bootleggers. But behind every great man...Bessie Starkman's roots
were in the slums of Toronto, and her ambition easily matched Perri's if
not exceeding his. She became know as the power behind the throne, and
cleverly guided Perri's empire to its zenith by the start of the 1930's.
Told through the eyes of David Rodgers, an ambitious reporter for the
Toronto Star, Perri recounts his life and passionate love affair with
Bessie on the eve of her tragic and mysterious death. The true story of
Rocco Perri and Bessie Starkman, Whisky Serenade is a story of ambition,
love and the strength of one extraordinary woman.
