Unlocking the Text: Script Analysis for Actors and Directors

When creating a character or developing a directorial picture of a play,
basic script analysis opens up a wealth of important information often
not covered in stage directions. Gaining a deeper understanding of the
world of the play allows for heightened appreciation and enjoyment of
the text, increased artistic freedom while remaining true to the
playwright's intentions for the play, and a clearer and more
professional performance or production. Unlocking the Text will cover a
variety of areas of play analysis, including audience response, main
idea and back-story, and character analysis, through a combination of
lecture, discussion and practical exercises.
Emphasis will be placed on how to gain a deeper understanding of the
world of the play quickly and effectively, as part of your personal
preparation as an actor and/or director. The course plan is flexible to
the experience level and needs of the group, and students are encouraged
to submit questions and requested subject areas prior to the session .
