AUDITIONS - VANCOUVER
----------------------------------
PANGAEA ARTS is holding auditions August 31st and September 1st for:

THE GULL by Daphne Marlatt. Music composed by Richard Emmert.
Directed by Richard Emmert and Akira Matsui.

This project is the development of an original Canadian Noh play.
Japanese traditional Noh theatre Masters Akira Matsui and Richard Emmert
will travel from Japan to mentor and collaborate with Canadian artists.

Classical Japanese Noh is one of the oldest continually performed
theatre forms in the world. Noh is an integrated combination of stylized
gesture, expressive dance, powerful chant, elegant mask, and intricate
percussion to create a uniquely mysterious and elegant beauty.

The story focuses on two brothers who, after the internment of WWII,
have returned to Steveston to fish on the coast. The ghost of their
mother appears to them - she has died during internment and is angry
that her sons have returned to the hostile coast. She entreats them to
return to their true home in Wakayama, Japan.

We are auditioning actors, dancers and singers for the following roles.

OLDER SON: Japanese Canadian fisherman, mid-to-late twenties.
YOUNGER SON: Japanese Canadian fisherman, early twenties
OLDER FISHERMAN: Japanese Canadian fisherman, early sixties.
CHORUS: We are seeking five men with strong vocal ability. The chorus
chants in the Noh style, but in English.

*** We are seeking performers with strong vocal and movement ability.
Training and or experience in Japanese Noh or Kyogen theatre an asset
but not essential. Japanese Canadian performers are encouraged to
audition.***

These auditions are for the workshop production which will take place in
March and early April of 2005. Exact workshop dates TBA.

We aim to perform the full production in the fall of 2005.
