1. The Shakespear Centre - Vancouver
------------------------------------------
Ongoing professional training in Shakespearean text and scene study
*	comprehending the text
*	finding the truth of the scene and communicating it through the
words
*	marrying the words to compelling active choices
*	exploring the differences between prose and verse
*	iambic pentameter - what is it; when and why is it used
*	using Shakespeare to grow as an actor

This course will demystify certain aspects of Shakespeare that tend to
intimidate actors, such as:

-the antiquated language
-	the rhythm
-	the long soliloquies and speeches
-	the historical context of relationships
-	differentiating between the epic, the comic and the everyday
-	unearthing the hidden patterns that provide clues to finding
your character
-	bridging the gap between the character's truth and your truth
-	the use of passion versus detachment
-	discovering the path towards relating Shakespeare to
contemporary experience, resulting in audience accessibility

"Instead of waiting for a rich TV job, you should get into the theatre
and work hard. Call it the Bard's blast furnace. Actors who tackle
Shakespeare will be steeled to handle every challenge they encounter.
Because if you can do Shakespeare, you can do any modern play they throw
at you. But if you do TV for years, you cannot necessarily do
Shakespeare" - celebrated actor John Neville

Playing Shakespeare
This three day workshop is designed to strengthen an actors ability to
play classical repertoire, as well as providing skills that would be
useful in any situation. Participants will be paired up and given the
scenes that will form the basis of the work for the session. Starting
with movement and ending with scene work, this workshop will give you an
opportunity to explore Shakespeare in greater depth.

The morning of day one will begin with a movement class to reconnect and
centre the actor physically in the space and in relation to what
surrounds them. This will be followed by work on vocal production and
reminders of what releases a powerful and free voice. The afternoon will
be spent at the table beginning to work on the scenes.
The remainder of the workshop will be spent finding strategies for
releasing the depth and emotional intensity of the repertoire. Part of
the time will be spent at the table unlocking the language. Then we will
move into exploring the physical shape of the scenes and the beginnings
of emotional connection with the texts, working towards finishing the
journey in each scene. Each group will spend equal time working through
their scenes and observing other groups\' work.

Class size - minimum 8, maximum 15
Date - February 23 to 25, 2004 each day runs from 10am to 6pm, Location
to be confirmed. Instructor - Andrew Freund
Cost - $150 for non-Equity, $120 for Equity and $90 to audit (price
includes lunch)
