Theatre Asylum presents the Toronto premiere of
THE TRIALS
of John Demjanjuk
a Holocaust Cabaret
By Jonathan Garfinkel
Director/Dramaturge Jen Herszman Capraru

Featuring Christine Brubaker, Dmitry Chepovetsky, Dov Mikelson, Frank
Moore and Clinton Walker. Set and costumes by Anjelija Djuric, lighting
design by Sandra Marcroft, sound by EC Woodley.

Theatre Asylum is proud to present The Trials of John Demjanjuk,
previewing March 2, opening on Wednesday, March 3 and running to March 7
at The Studio Theatre, as part of Harbourfront Centre's HATCH:emerging
performance projects. The Trials sold out at Rhubarb and Ashkenaz
Festivals, and was developed at the NAC and Banff. Prior to the Toronto
premiere, Theatre Asylum has been invited to tour The Trials to the
Chutzpah Festival, Vancouver and Intrepid Theatre, Victoria.

John Demjanjuk, meet your doppelganger. In 1987, Demjanjuk, a retired
auto worker from Cleveland, Ohio, was accused of being Ivan the Terrible
of the Nazi extermination camp, Treblinka. Identified by survivors,
Demjanjuk was brought to trial in Jerusalem in 1988 and sentenced to
hang. The international community's investment in finding the truth
escalated and so began a strange period of litigation which saw
Demjanjuk acquitted in 1993, yet his American citizenship was revoked in
2002. Was he guilty? And if so, of what?

The Trials probes the nature of guilt, the need for retribution, and the
lessons still to be learned today from the Holocaust. The style of The
Trials is cabaret, inspired by the great political theatre of Bertolt
Brecht, and features celebrated Canadian actor Frank Moore as John
Demjanjuk and music co-composed by Christine Brubaker and Dora-award
winner Allen Cole

Jonathan Garfinkel's first play Walking to Russia, was produced by
Theatre Asylum at Theatre Passe Muraille, "Garfinkel's background
as a poet shines in this ambitious first play." Globe. He has been a
member of the CanStage Writers Unit for two seasons where he's working
on Blind, a sex comedy set on the West Bank; was Playwright-
in-Residence at the Blyth Festival; and has been active as dramaturge
and writer for Paul Thompson. His poetry has been published across
Canada. Jennifer H. Capraru is the artistic director of Theatre Asylum
where directing credits include Walking to Russia "a well-crafted
production, visually striking and lyrical" Globe, My Mother's Courage, 3
Dora Nominations, "The direction is spare and superb, both visually and
emotionally" Globe, "Deeply moving and illuminating art" Montreal

The SBC Theatre Presents Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
February 16-29. With Brenda Robins, Ric Reid, Patricia Fagan and Allan
Hawko. Directed by Michael Shamata. A co-production with Manitoba
Theatre Centre. Returning home from a night of drinking and carousing,
George and his wife Martha enter into an all out war of words and wills.
Soon a younger couple find themselves uncomfortably close to the front
lines of this marital war zone. After a long night of brutal honesty and
painful confrontation, both couples' deepest secrets are laid bare and
illusions nastily exposed. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is as
hard-hitting and funny as ever, leaving us no choice but to pay close
attention. Albee continues to rail against complacent theatre. The
creative team features Set & Costume Designer - John Ferguson, Lighting
Designer - Steven Hawkins, Stage Manager - Margaret Brook, Assistant
Stage - Manager Melanie St-Jacques and Apprentice Stage Manager - Amanda
Corber.

Monday Night Talkbacks

Every Monday night following the play, some of the actors and/or
designers will remain on stage to take questions from the audience.
This is an opportunity for the audience to get up close and personal
with the people that make it all happen. Combined with the new lower
rates for this evening, Monday night performances have become an
outstanding package that true theatre buffs cannot resist.
