JOB - GENERAL MANAGER - EDMONTON

Catalyst Theatre is inviting applications for the position of General
Manager commencing 16 August 2004.  Catalyst Theatre is a not-for-profit
organization, established in 1978.  For the past eight years, Catalyst
has been based in a 6400 square foot restored warehouse space in the
heart of Edmonton's Theatre District.  The theatre includes a 2500
square foot flexible performance space, lobby, dressing rooms and
offices.  Catalyst Theatre is dedicated to:

1.	the creation of original productions by the company's artistic
director,
2.	touring these productions nationally and internationally,
3.	presenting a season of creation-based theatre at the company's
flexible performance space,
4.	fostering the development of creation-based theatre artists in
Edmonton.  

Over the past eight years Catalyst has created several award-winning
productions that have toured the U.K., Australia, Eastern, Central and
Western Canada, and Maine.  In addition, Catalyst produces a full season
of four to six productions at its venue in the heart of Edmonton's
theatre district.  The company's Edmonton season includes original
Catalyst Theatre productions, workshops, and the Blind Dates Series
which brings the work of three creation-based companies (one
international and two Canadian) to Edmonton audiences. Catalyst's annual
budget ranges from $450,000 to $800,000, depending on touring activity
and capital improvements to its facility.  The General Manager and
Artistic Director report directly to the Board of Directors and are
supported by a small staff of 1.5 permanent full-time positions, one
seasonal full-time position, and anywhere from twenty to forty artists
and technicians engaged on a per project basis.

Principal duties include:  

*	Supporting the Artistic Director's vision and organization's
strategic plans by securing the necessary resources (finances, human
resources, equipment, premises).
*	Creating, implementing and managing the annual budget and cash
flow.
*	Preparing operating and project grant applications to government
funders and foundations.
*	Supervising solicitations for corporate sponsorships and
individual donations.
*	Organizing and implementing fundraising special events.
*	Hiring, supervising and terminating administrative staff,
technicians and artists.
*	Negotiating contracts with theatre companies Catalyst presents
as part of its Blind Dates Series.
*	Representing Catalyst Theatre at community events and meetings
of professional organizations such as the Professional Association of
Canadian Theatres and the Edmonton Arts Council.
*	Assisting the board through timely reports, attendance at board
meetings, and creation of policies and procedures.

Applicants should have substantial experience as an arts administrator
or the equivalent of experience plus education.  Computer literacy in
word processing, spreadsheets and e-mail programs are a requirement, as
are strong written and verbal communication skills.  Assets include
experience/familiarity with the Canadian Theatre Agreement and producing
theatrical productions, contracting artists, managing personnel, writing
policy, arts advocacy, and the ability to juggle multiple tasks without
missing deadlines.    

Starting salary is $36,000 to $39,000 per annum, depending  upon
experience.
