------------------------------------------------
Volcano is offering two one-week long Bouffon intensives in Toronto.

- co-taught by Jacques Lecoq and Philippe Gaulier specialists -
acclaimed American Lecoq teacher, Sarah Sanford; and Toronto-based
Bouffon teacher and Gaulier School graduate Adam Lazarus.
- designed for both professional and pre-professional dancers, actors
and/or clowns

In the twenty years since I started performing I've only encountered a
handful of exceptional teachers. Sarah Sanford is one of them. If you
get the chance, study with her. - clown Neil Muscott, Artistic Director,
Cirque du Poulet

Two different levels will be offered:

Level I

Sunday, Aug.1 - Saturday, Aug.7 Sun/Sat 12-5pm Mon-Fri 6-9pm

Price: $330 regular, or $260 - special rate for CAEA, for 25 hours
instruction over 7 days

An introductory class. Here students will be introduced to the pedagogy
and practice of Bouffon through the study of "jeu" and the examination
of several Lecoq principles (space, rhythm, fixed point, complicity,
focus). You do not need to have any theatre experience to take this
course. Professionals from various backgrounds
(dance/theatre/film/clown) will also find this a new and useful
territory.

Level II

Monday, Aug.9 - Sunday, Aug.15 Mon-Fri 6-9pm Sat/Sun 12-5pm

Price: $330 regular or $260 - special rate for CAEA, for 25 hours

An intermediate class. Here students focus on writing, directing and
performing Bouffon turns. This deeper exploration into the Bouffon
world will culminate in an informal showing at the end of the workshop.
Completion of Level I or prior experience in Bouffon is required for
this class. Former Volcano Bouffon Intensive students of Sarah Sanford
particularly welcome.

5. PUPPETRY - TORONTO
---------------------------------
Toronto School of Puppetry
Spring Season - June 7-25, 2004

20% discount for CAEA members who register by May 31!

Three weeks of instruction in the art of puppetry by experts in the
field. Class size is limited to 10 students per course for Week 1 and 2,
and only 6 students in Week 3.
Enrolment is on a first come, first served basis -- Don't Delay!

Classes are held at Puppetmongers Studio:
233 Carlaw Ave, Unit 114, near Queen and Pape.

Week 1: June 7-11 9:30am to 4:00pm daily
Building Table-top Puppets (the new Bunraku)

Table-top puppetry has revolutionized the use of puppets in theatre.
Using three-dimensional, sculptural figures, the manipulators work in
full view of the audience, close to the figures, which allows the entire
stage area to come into play. Students will learn about existing styles
and techniques, then design and build their own table-top character from
wood, hardware and fabrics. (Some previous experience with saws and
tools required.)

Week 2: June 14-18 9:30am to 4:00pm daily
Towards a New Puppet Theatre

Puppetry is in transition from folk art to theatre form, and it has huge
potential as a multi-media art form, combining the visual arts with all
the elements of theatre. This course is an exhilarating exploration of
what you will need to know to create your own innovative puppet theatre
works. In this week a myriad of guest artist instructors, from many
disciplines, will lead you through the entire creative process to
explore dramaturgy, design, puppet technology, movement, and even a bit
of business planning. So come and get a boost in creating your own new
theatre with puppets.

Week 3: June 21-25 9:30am to 4:00pm daily
A New Puppet Theatre

This course will build on the students' discoveries made in Week 2, with
the creation of a new short puppet theatre piece. Participants will
work on scenes from the Chinese classic, Magical Monkey King with
director Michael Kelly, of Shakespeare in Action, and other guest
instructors as well as the Puppetmongers. This will involve the
participants in brainstorming, construction of figures, development of
characters, staging design, and a short performance for an invited
audience. (NOTE: Week 2 is a prerequisite for Week 3).

Fees and materials: 1 week: $450, 2 weeks:$800, all 3 weeks: $1100
(after CAEA discount: $360, $640 & $880!) To Register: Contact the
Toronto School of Puppetry at school at puppetmongers.com or call
416-691-0806 to confirm that there is space available in the course and
arrange payment. A cheque is required to hold your place in the class.

6. MEISNER ACTING TECHNIQUE - TORONTO
---------------------------------------------------------
Taught by John Riven

The training begins with a period of extensive improvisational
exercises, including the "repetition exercise," in which the actor's
attention is focused upon his or her partner's simple, real behavior.
After this strong improvisational beginning, the students will
eventually apply learned principles to a text. The exercises are
designed to get rid of the "actor" in you and let you start the process
of shedding anything extraneous and false as you fully inhabit the
reality of this very moment. The work is challenging, honest and most
rewarding. Students of the Sanford Meisner's method have included the
following: Robert Duvall, Joanne Woodward, Jon Voight, Gregory Peck,
Diane Keaton, Peter Falk, Steve McQueen, Mary Steenburgen, Jeff
Goldblum, Sydney Pollack, and David Mamet."

John Riven is a graduate of the Neighbourhood Playhouse where he studied
under Sanford Meisner and Richard Pinter. He is a founding member of the
Shadowfax Theatre Company in NYC. The Company, created by Neighbourhood
Playhouse graduates, produced original plays in NYC during the 80's.
Other founding members include Allison Janney : American Beauty, The
West Wing, Finding Nemo, Steve Rogers, screenwriter: Hope Floats,
Stepmom , and Lisa Marie Radano , playwright and screenwriter: Mrs.
Winterbourne. While directing and acting with Shadowfax, John began
teaching acting and eventually opened his own studio in Manhattan. One
of his more prominent former students, Doug Hutchison, went on to
starring roles in the films, The Green Mile, The Salton Sea and Sam and
Me. John has been teaching ongoing classes in Toronto for 3 years.

A new 6 week session is commencing Thursdays from June 3rd to July 8th.
Class time is 7:00pm - 10:00 pm at Central Studios, 680 Yonge St 2nd
floor. The cost of the series will be $190 for non-union or $150 for
Equity/ACTRA. A $50 deposit is required before the class to reserve
space.
