Equity Showcase Theatre & Tapestry New Opera Works' 2004 Music
Directors'/Stage Directors' Laboratory 
General Statement 

In response to growing interest in the field of music theatre and opera,
and in anticipation of an increase of new works entering the repertoire,
Tapestry and Equity Showcase, provide this groundbreaking collaboration
for stage and music directors.   

The Need

Currently, opportunities for directors and music directors to explore
the full potential of music in live performance are limited. There are
few Opportunities for Canadian stage directors to work in the field of
opera and opportunities in the field of new opera/music theatre are even
rarer. 

The Program 

Initiated in 2001, the Directors' Lab is a ten day intensive workshop
for stage directors and music directors to explore the full potential of
music in live performance and to take full advantage of a shared
artistic vision. Six residencies will be offered - three to music
directors and three to stage directors.  Lab leaders are Wayne
Strongman, Artistic director of Tapestry; Sharon Poitras, Executive
Director of Equity Showcase Theatre, Keith Turnbull, noted teacher,
director and dramaturg. Participants will have access to singers,
repetiteurs and dramaturgical staff while collaborating on selected
works in development. 

Eligibility 

Professional stage directors, conductors and music directors must be
collaboration-minded, willing to explore the issues involved in tackling
new works of opera/music theatre, share their viewpoints, learn best
practises and explore the dynamics between music director and director.
Stage directors, music directors and conductors who do not yet have a
known body of work, must provide a letter of reference from a
professional in the field to be eligible for the residency program. 
All participants accepted will receive a residency bursary offered by
Equity Showcase and Tapestry, that covers program fees of $2,000 and
will each receive a $200 honorarium for the period. Participants
selected will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation.
Participants must be available from August 24th to September 2nd
(inclusive) on a full-time basis. 
Guidelines for Submissions

All applicants please submit 

A cover letter that includes your name, address, telephone & fax
numbers, e-mail address & website.

A resume or CV outlining your professional experience and relevant
academic and professional training.  

A one-page description stating your interest in participating in and why
you would benefit from the program. This one page may be included as
part of the cover letter.
 
For applicants who do not yet have a known body of work, provide a
letter of reference from a professional in the field. 

Submissions will be accepted by mail, fax and e-mail. See information
below.  

Selection Process

1. Submissions will be assessed by Wayne Strongman, Artistic Director -
Tapestry new opera works, Sharon Poitras, Executive Director - Equity
Showcase Theatre. 

2. Successful candidates will be advised by telephone and must confirm
participation by June 30, 2003.  

3. Tapestry or Equity Showcase Theatre will provide a formal letter of
invitation that can be used to acquire a travel grant or as
documentation for securing other funding sources.
