1. DARIO FO WORKSHOP with MARIO PIROVANO - VANCOUVER
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Italian Cultural Institute, in association with BellaLuna Productions
Presents a one-day workshop with Mario Pirovano, Italian protégé of Nobel Prize-winning Playwright Dario Fo.

"THE SECRET OF THE JESTER: GESTURE, WORD AND ACTION IN THE ONE-MAN-SHOWS OF DARIO FO"

Part 1: The jester: who he was and is. Speaking with the body. Who´s afraid of the jester? From the edict of Frederick II of Swabia to censorship, past and present.

Part 2: `Grammelot´ - from the Commedia dell´Arte to rap: breaking the rules of language, speaking without words. Grammelot re-invented by Dario Fo and its present-day relevance.

Part 3: The birth and evolution of a work by Dario Fo: how the idea for a subject is born, how a canvas is built up, what is meant by `improvising´, the relationship with the audience, the action in relation to present-day events.

In town to perform "Johan Padan and the Discovery of America" by Dario Fo, Mario Pirovano has taken part in all the works produced by Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo and Franca Rame since 1983 either as an actor or as assistant producer, stage director or simultaneous translator. Says Dario Fo: "Mario Pirovano is a self-taught actor of great expressive quality...I can guarantee that you will be pleased".

Nov 23 - Dec 16, 2004
8 classes
CAEA $280 Non-CAEA $350
Deadline for application: Nov 11

A workshop for experienced actors. Over the 8 sessions, we will dig into scenes from great modern writers (both Canadian and International). The workshop will explore diverse styles of contemporary writing - everything from Mamet to Albee, Neil LaBute to Caryl Churchill, Adam Pettle to Judith Thompson. This is not a "How to Act" Class. It's an opportunity for a group of actors to crack open scenes from great contemporary plays and bring them to life. A chance for actors to challenge and stretch themselves in an environment of honest feedback and encouragement. Scene partners will be assigned and participants will prepare work for the first class. Rehearsal outside class time is essential.

3. THE CRAFT OF ON-CAMERA ACTING - TORONTO
---------------------------------------------------------------
# 1480 The Craft of On-Camera Acting
Sat & Sun
Oct 23 - 24, 2004
CAEA $200 Non-CAEA $250
Deadline for application: Oct 14
Instructor: John Dawson

Hit your mark. Find your light. Learn our shadow moves. Develop your apparatus. This is an intensive two-day workshop in the 'craft' of on-camera acting for the enthused novice as well as the theatrically-trained actor who is making the transition from the stage to screen. Working from prepared monologues, actors are taken through a series of exercises that will help further develop their abilities to synchronize body and mind, the psychological and the physical, thus enabling them to 'get under the written text'. These internal processes are stressed simultaneously with the external demands so that the actor will develop his/her 'craft', that being the relationship with the camera/lights/frame as well as the physical dexterity to modulate the volume of their performance for the given perimeters. The difference between theatrical acting and on-camera 'behavior' is explored and strongly emphasized.

John Dawson: Mr. Dawson has studied, written and acted with numerous comedy troupes including the famous Second City. John has lectured on screenwriting at Trinity College Dublin, taught film acting at Trinity's Samuel Beckett Centre, Dublin's Gaiety School of Acting, The Actors Centre in London and Toronto's Equity Showcase Theatre. He served as art director on films and theatrical works including an Off-Broadway production in New York. He is a theatre producer/director, acting coach, actor and produced screenwriter. John resides in Dublin and works with institutions, theatre companies and film and TV production companies in Canada, USA, Ireland and the UK.
