ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Broken English Theatre Company

The Broken English Theatre Company's mandate is to produce socially
relevant, cross-cultural plays and to undertake theatre education
projects that contribute to the development of cultural life in our
region and that endeavour to provide employment opportunities for
theatre professionals new to Canada. Founded in 1995, the Broken English
Theatre Company (BET) enriches the Ottawa community by producing plays,
developing new works, and organizing annual writing competitions. 

BET currently seeks an Artistic Director to oversee the activities of
the company and to provide artistic leadership. Reporting directly to
the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director is responsible for all
artistic functions of the BET including programming, artistic planning,
and maintaining relationships with the artistic and newcomer
communities. The Artistic Director will also oversee the General
Manager, direct one production per season, hire and supervise artistic
personnel, and assist with grant and proposal writing.

This contract position is considered part-time to start with a
possibility of full-time work beginning in 2005. Salary will be
commensurate with experience. 

The ideal candidate will possess:

A strong background and passion for theatre; previous Artistic Director
and/or directing experience considered an asset.
A deep commitment to the mandate of the company (see above)
Knowledge of the issues faced by newcomers to Canada, especially artists

Management or supervisory experience 
Creativity and strong leaderships skills, including a positive and
enthusiastic attitude 
Solid relationships and contacts in the Ottawa community 
Strong communication skills
