a playwright . . . with a girlfriend who is writing a play 
about a playwright  . . . and his girlfriend,
who in turn is writing a play . . . about a playwright and his
girlfriend.
descending through these layers, the characters become 
increasingly simple and leave the "real" playwright with
the reassuring illusion that he's more sophisticated than his creations.
