The Shop on Main Street - Audition call
Deadline for submissions: February 20, 2007

Te-Amim Music Theatre is holding auditions for our upcoming workshop of 
THE SHOP ON MAIN STREET, a new musical based on the novel by Ladislav
Grosman.  The film adaptation of this novel won an academy award for
best foreign film in 1965. Te-Amim's production is directed by Mark
Cassidy.  Workshop will take place in Toronto, July 2-7.. Production is
slated for Al Green Theatre, Nov. 8-18, 2007. 

The Story
Tono, a good-natured carpenter living in a Slovak town in 1942, 
unwittingly becomes a player in the gathering moral crisis involving 
the abuse and persecution of the Jews in his town when he is assigned 
to run a dry goods shop owned by Rosalie, an elderly Jewess. The two 
develop a friendly and caring relationship. Tono maintains an 
appearance that he is in charge while allowing Rosalie to run the shop. 
When Tono learns that the Jews are being deported, he hides Rosalie 
from authorities. The story ends in tragedy as the intense stress of 
the situation causes Rosalie to suffer a fatal heart attack while Tono 
loses all hope and takes his own life.

TONO:  A poor Slovak carpenter, about 40

EVELINE:  His sharp-tongued, wife, about 35

MRS LAUTMANN:  A widowed elderly Jewish shopkeeper of failing health, 
about 70.

MARCUS:  Commander of local Guardists, married to Eveline's sister, 
about 30.

ROSE:  His wife and Eveline's attractive, flirtatious sister, about 30.

PITI BACHI:  The Town Crier, a good-humoured man.

JOSEF KATZ:  The Town Barber, contemporary of Mrs Lautmann.

All roles require singing and acting ability.  Please prepare one song 
of your choice and a contemporary monologue for the audition.

Te-Amim Music Theatre is unique in its focus on Holocaust as a route to
understanding antiracist issues. For more than 15 years the company has
contributed to arts expression in schools, as well as producing music
and music theatre, artistic residencies, workshops and educational
resource materials. Te-Amim premiered in Toronto the Holocaust-era opera
Brundibar, the song cycle The Flower Horse and the first Canadian
Holocaust drama The Secret of Gabi's Dresser.
