B.C. ARTS FUNDING CUTS UPDATE
------------------------------------------------------------

Detailed analysis of the 2010-2011 British Columbia budget has revealed that the provincial Government did not restore arts funding to 2008/2009 levels despite the unanimous recommendation by the government's own Standing Committee on Finance.

The Vancouver Alliance for Arts and Culture's executive director Amir Ali Alibhai has reported that "In fact what we have seen are further cuts to core funding for a total loss of 32.4 per cent from funding levels in 2008/09."

Read "Reality Check: Arts Funding Cut By BC Budget" on the Alliance for Arts and Culture's "Creativity Counts" website (http://creativitycounts.wordpress.com/) for more information.

Late last week Spencer Herbert, MLA for Vancouver-West End and Opposition Critic for Tourism, Culture and the Arts, wrote to thank Equity for speaking out against arts funding cuts. Executive Director Arden R. Ryshpan recently sent a letter to every sitting MLA in the B.C. legislature demanding that arts funding be reinstated. A copy of the Winter 2010 issue of EQ, including the article "Cancelled Due to Lack of Funding," was enclosed with the letter to all 85 MLAs.
