2011 INDEPENDENT THEATRE REVIEW - FINAL REPORT TO THE EQUITY MEMBERSHIP
-------------------------------

Equity Council is pleased to share the final report from the 2011
Independent Theatre Review. The report is now available online at
EQUITYONLINE (http://www.caea.com).

Doing the research for this project has taken considerably longer than
many hoped it would, but the results have been worth the wait. By
collecting information so broadly, we have a much better idea of
the relative value all members place on the benefits they expect to
receive under indie contracts, and how those may vary across the
country. It has also afforded us the chance to hear a wider range of
views on several key topics, and that input will be incorporated as
well.

The Committee has already provided Council with some policy
recommendations from which to begin work. Drafting and passage of the
final policy changes will start at our upcoming meeting, so that staff
has the direction required to prepare new agreements. As with the
current suite of agreements that serve independent theatre, any new
agreements will reflect the input we received from the membership, and
we will do our best to respond productively to concerns identified by
both engagers and staff.

With the Tangerine Project already in place for PACT members, and with
some recent feedback on successes and issues, we expect that new
independent theatre arrangements can be formalized within a relatively
short period of time. Our Executive Director, Arden R. Ryshpan,
anticipates being able to share a draft with Council once CTA
negotiations are substantially complete. Wider distribution for feedback
will follow shortly afterward.

Council would like to thank all those who contributed to this work.
Enormous credit is due to the members of the Review Committee: Jim
Arthur, Deena Aziz, Sharon DiGenova, Kerry Ann Doherty, Steven
Greenfield, Cheryl Hutton, Kris Joseph (chair), Richard Lee, Gina
Puntil, Mark Wallace, Colleen Winton, and Katey Wright. Collecting,
collating and distilling a truly bewildering amount of input was no
small task, and that's putting it mildly.

Thanks, of course, are also due to the members, engagers and staff who
contributed their wisdom, experience and needs by responding to the
survey. It is vital that our engagement policies continue to reflect the
engagement needs of the membership working in all disciplines in
Equity's jurisdiction, and the detailed information you provided will
enable us to do that more effectively than in the past.

In this, as in all matters, what we do relies on you.
