In our desire to reflect the world and our community on our stage, The Grand
Theatre is committed to diverse, inclusive casting. We encourage submissions
from all qualified performers, without regard to age, disability, ethnicity,
race, or gender identity. For this production, we strongly encourage
submissions from Deaf and hard of hearing actors.

Additional information:
The Grand Theatre is seeking submissions for two female roles in our World
Premiere production of Trina Davies’ Silence: Mabel and Alexander Graham
Bell in January, 2018.

Silence is based on the true story of Mabel and Alexander Graham Bell and
will be directed by Peter Hinton.

This play is set in pre-American Sign Language North America.

MABEL BELL – Alexander Graham Bell’s wife
Approximate ages in the play: She is 65, but plays points in her life from
16-65.
Having lost her hearing at the age of five, Mabel learned to function in the
hearing world of upper class 19th-century America. She was an exceptional
lip reader, and took instruction in Europe where she learned to speak other
languages. In our play Mabel speaks (she does not sign).

ELIZA BELL – Alexander Graham Bell’s mother
Approximate ages in the play: We meet her at age 46 - and then she ages to
82
Had three sons, of which Alec was the only one surviving past his 20s. Was
an accomplished painter of miniatures. Gradually became completely deaf.
Eliza does not speak on stage.

Auditions will be held in Toronto in January 2017 and an ASL interpreter
will be present.

Equity members will be seen first at all open audition calls. Equity members
cast in this production will be engaged under an Equity form of contract.
CAEA members: please bring your membership card to the audition.
