Why Should I Care about Health Care Sustainability?

Monday, August 19, 7:30 p.m. (doors open 7 p.m.)
Duke of York, 39 Prince Arthur Ave (St. George subway)

According to a TD economics special report: Ontario is confronted with a serious fiscal issue. Every year, government spending on health care increases more than revenues. As a result the amount available for other government spending decreases. If current trends prevail, health care expenditures would make up 80 per cent of total program spending by 2030, up from 46 per cent today. All other programs, such as education, would be funded out of the remaining 20 per cent. This is not feasible. Much of this expenditure increase is attributed to an aging population with greater demands on the health care system. Dr. Ernie Lightman, an economics professor at UofT will discuss why we need to care about elder care and how we can make sure that our health care system is sustainable in the future.

Laugh Therapy Improv, SUMMER DROP-INS

Mondays Aug 19, 26 @ 6 pm – 8:30 pm
The Centre for Social Innovation - Annex, Fringe Creation Lab [4th floor], 720 Bathurst
$20

A class that focuses less on ‘games’ and more on professional & personal growth. The results are no less hilarious; you will mos def LYAO. The main idea behind these exercises is to re-learn how to ‘play’. We all knew how to do this quite naturally as children, but as adults most of us have learned to not ‘goof around’. Allowing ourselves to play is essential to good theatre and to our sanity as humans. This can be immeasurably helpful when it comes to thinking on your feet at work, speaking in front of others, and generally enjoying life more.

Swamp Line 9 Reportback
Discussion on Line 9 and tar sands resistance in Southern Ontario (+ silent art auction)

Sat. August 24, 7 pm
Centre for Social Innovation, 215 Spadina, Toronto

On Thursday, June 20th, a group of people started an occupation of the Enbridge's Westover Pump Station near Hamilton, Ontario, at one of the several sits of construction on the Line 9 pipeline. The action, which lasted nearly a week, was both a response to Enbridge's careless disregard for our lives with it's despicable track record of oil spills, and an act of solidarity with the communities most affected by Tar Sands developments. Join Swamp Line 9 organizers for an evening to discuss Line 9 and Tar Sands resistance in Southern Ontario.

**We will also be hosting a silent art auction to raise funds for Swamp Line 9 legal support. Light refreshments will be served ***

No Logging, No Mercury: Noise Demo at Kathleen Wynne’s home!

Sunday, August 25
Buses depart from Christie Pits Park, at 11:30 a.m. Return at 3 p.m.
Register: http://bit.ly/GNdemoatWynne

Join marching bands from across North America for a fun-filled, family friendly protest at Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne's home to demand an end to unwanted logging in Grassy Narrows and real action on mercury poisoning. Mercury poisoning has left its terrible mark on three generations of Anishinaabe people – loss of balance, tremors, loss of vision, numbness, cerebral palsy, and more. Last summer Wynne promised to do something about this tragedy. Over a year later there has been no improvement in the lives of Grassy Narrows people, only talk. Instead of helping the Province continues to plan for more clearcut logging in Grassy Narrows' watershed – a practice that further increases mercury poison levels in local fish. No more delays, we need action now.

How Tar Sands Threaten Our Communities

Sunday, August 25, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
East York Civic Centre, 850 Coxwell Ave.

Featured speaker: Ben Powless, Mohawk environmental advocate organizing Ottawa's community campaign against tar sands pipeline. Ben works extensively with the Indigenous Environmental Networks on climate policy... along with East End Toronto community voices. Meeting begins with a short video on tar sands.

Concern is growing. Word is getting out about Enbridge Corp.'s plan to convert an aging cross-Toronto pipeline (Line 9) to transport a toxic mixture of bitumen (tar) and chemicals. Hundreds of East End Toronto residents have expressed alarm about the dangers of a spill and the effect on climate change. Our public event August 25 will enable community voices to be heard with lots of time for discussion.
