Positions: Hemlock Conservation Strike Team
Organization: Hemlock Conservation Nova Scotia
Location: Southwest Nova Scotia

Work on a Hemlock Conservation Strike Team using modern methods to control an invasive insect Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) that is rapidly killing Nova Scotia’s last old-growth hemlock forests. Field treatments take place in high-value hemlock forests in Provincial Protected Areas, Southwest NS - Kespukwitk.

Work Duration: 3+ years — to Dec 2026, 8 month seasonal, April to December. Successful candidates will work until December 8th, 2023. Work resumes early April 2024. Breaks in employment may occur during long periods of heavy rain or drought.

Application closing date: September 27th, 2023.

Work Description: Staff learn how to safely administer small amounts of systemic chemical products designed for tree injection and basal bark treatments, conduct tree health assessments, tree marking and monitoring. Use of technical skills/knowledge including Survey 123, Field Maps, Avenza, and compliance with regulations and safe work practices applicable with administering systemic pesticides. Work frequently on an integrated team with trained volunteers (‘Hemlock Heroes’) who assist with tree marking and tree injections. Several overnight wilderness stays may occur. Successful candidates travel to/from Caledonia, NS.

Wages: Starting $ 22.00/hr to $23.50/hr following 3 month probationary period. Some opportunities for advancement exist.

Work hours: Minimum 37.5 hr/week. A compressed schedule (10 hr shifts) may be considered.

Employees must:
• Be willing to apply small, targeted amounts of pesticide that functions inside hemlock trees.
• Be physically fit and capable of traveling through long and remote stretches of forest and rough terrain.
• Wear protective equipment.
• Have ability to carry/lift heavy loads.
• Work in a range of temperatures and environmental conditions, canoe over water.
• Comply with safe work protocols.
• Work well in a team environment.
• Work alongside/ help lead volunteers from ‘Hemlock Heroes’ program.

Useful assets:
• Pesticide Operator Certificate required for advancement (training on-line)
• Education in Natural Resources/Forestry/Biology
• GIS-mapping
• Wilderness First Aid
