Assistant Stage Director
Vancouver Opera is currently offering three six-week positions in the
2004/05 Season for assistant stage directors as part of its ongoing
Resident Assistant Director Program. It is anticipated that one of the
04/05 participants will be invited to return for the 2005/06 Season.
The purpose of this program is to:
* Develop young Canadian directors in opera
* Provide support to the stage director and work within the
structure of production staff (Artistic Administration, Production, and
Stage Management)
* Provide a bridge between the administrative offices of the
company and the rehearsal hall
* Provide opportunities to stage direct Vancouver Opera's touring
show when possible
* Integrate the unique skills and background of the successful
candidate and use them in other departments and needs of the company
(e.g. education, public speaking, conducting workshops, writing house
program notes and doing research for community outreach programs)
* Represent the entire mandate and function of Vancouver Opera: to
the community, to donors, to artists, to partners in education etc.
Criteria for selection in to the program:
* Musical competency
* Some professional directing credits in theatre or opera
* Relevant post-secondary education (e.g. BFA in theatre, B.Mus.)
* Demonstrated interest and knowledge of opera and music theatre
* Demonstrated written and verbal skills
* At least rudimentary ability in languages (French, Italian,
German)
* Must be or must become a member of Canadian Actors' Equity
Association
Job Description:
* Come to rehearsal with a thorough knowledge of the score and its
performance tradition
* Come to rehearsal with a strong knowledge of the composer and
the milieu in which the work was created
* Participate cooperatively in rehearsals to the extent that stage
director requires
* Work in close association with Stage Management
* Identify and understand the diverse needs of Vancouver Opera and
provide a conduit for assisting the company in meeting those needs
* Attend regular weekly departmental meetings with the Director of
Artistic Administration
* Attend all possible general staff meetings
* Work closely with the Education Manager to deliver artistic
expertise and support to the Music!Words!Opera! program in elementary
schools as well with other secondary and post-secondary educational
partners
* Attend all rehearsals, production meetings, theatre technical
rehearsals, and performances.

* Written statement of artistic and professional expectations and
skills
* Resume
* Portfolio of reviews, photographs, writing samples, etc
* Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by various
representatives of the company in Vancouver
* Three candidates will be each be offered a six-week contract for
one of the following mainstage productions in the Season: Madama
Butterfly, Cosi fan tutte, A Masked Ball
* All candidates will be given written and verbal feedback after
the contract period and will have ample opportunity through the contract
period to discuss ideas, challenges, and questions as they arise.
* All candidates should be prepared to return the following season
(2005/06) for a twelve to twenty-four week contract
This program is conducted under the jurisdiction of the Vancouver Opera
Agreement between the company and Canadian Actors' Equity. The minimum
weekly fee for Assistant Stage Directors in the most recent season
(2003/04) was: $900.68. Vancouver Opera shall cover the Artist's return
airfare from their home city, but does not provide accommodation for the
period of the engagement.
