ONGOING PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN SHAKESPEAREAN TEXT AND SCENE STUDY
This course will demystify certain aspects of Shakespeare that tend to
intimidate actors, such as:
- the antiquated language
- the rhythm
- the long soliloquies and speeches
- the historical context of relationships
- differentiating between the epic, the comic and the everyday
- unearthing the hidden patterns that provide clues to finding
your character
- bridging the gap between the character's truth and your truth
- the use of passion versus detachment
- discovering the path towards relating Shakespeare to
contemporary experience, resulting in audience accessibility
THE INSTRUCTORS
Denyse Wilson, a graduate of Studio 58, has taught Shakespearean
technique at Bard on the Beach's Young Shakespearean Training Program
and consistently inspires her students to new levels of ability in
communicating the Bard's magic. Her passion for Shakespeare is born
from experience. Besides nine seasons at Bard on the Beach playing such
roles as Rosalind, Hermia, Viola, Bianca, Ophelia, Cordelia, Portia,
Hermione, Isabella, and Cleopatra, Denyse also played Juliet and Viola
for Carousel Theatre, Ophelia for Theatre Calgary, Desdemona for The
Atlantic Theatre Festival, and Venus for Savage God.
Scott Bellis, also a graduate of Studio 58, has been a Vancouver-based
actor for 17 years and has worked with almost every acting company in
town, however the mainstay of his career has been rooted in Shakespeare.
He was a founding company member at Bard on the Beach in 1990 and has
appeared in eleven of the festival's fifteen seasons; major roles there
include Petruchio, Hamlet, Puck, Caliban, MacDuff and Henry V. He has
also performed Shakespeare for Carousel Theatre, Tamahnous, and the
Globe in Regina. His work as an actor has been nominated for ten Jessie
Richardson awards, five of which were for Shakespearean roles. Scott's
teaching experience includes adult Scene Study classes at Carousel
Theatre School, Shakespeare Studies at the International Bacchalaureate
program at Churchill Secondary school and private coaching in Classical
Text.
