About the play: The ‘What if...?” leaping off point of Mary-Colin
Chisholm’s quirky new comedy comes from the rural story telling traditions
of her childhood. Two spinster sisters, abandoned by their parents years
before, weave fact and fantasy into a blend of truth, fiction and gossip
to entertain and detain their surprise guest, a hapless folklorist who’s
car has broken down at the foot of their driveway. Sugar Mary believes it
is destiny that they meet, much to the dismay of her fiercely protective
sister Yewina.
SUGAR MARY: (UNCERTAIN AGE) Rural spinster, innocent and sheltered,
somehow prescient with perhaps an air of “other-worldliness” about her; a
wicked storyteller; her best friend is a chicken named Sheila
YEWINA: (three years older than Sugar Mary) the practical sister of the
duo, hunter/provider, fiercely protective of her younger sister
SCOTT: (25-45) American, a folklorist and amateur Norwegian folk dancer,
perennial student and searcher
