[CANUFNET] Greenbelt Dumping info

Hi Kim,

Further to my previous email, we also thought to create an information
sheet that politely reminds people of the fines associated with the
behaviour of dumping. We extracted those fines outlined by the Parks
by-law that may apply to those who live adjacent to parks or greenbelts.
This was still in development and was planned to go out with the
notification of encroachment into parkland. The notification makes the
resident aware of what has been violated and then requests compliance by
a certain date.

Again you do need an education program to go along with a by-law or
policy that has some teeth to fine dumpers. What Jill has outlined is
similar to what we figured would work...anything similar to a litter'not
campaign would work...but you need a budget for it and the materials to
go along.

Our stewardship co-ordinator designed some very nice booklet styled
brochures that talk about natural areas, with one targeted at Neighbours
of Natural Areas.

In addition there is a more detailed brochure entitled "Are You
Encroaching?" that discusses the effects of encroachment.

These were distributed to residents who surround the parks, initially
and are available on our website. In addition, on earth day and similar
other public forums we try to distribute these various pieces of
literature.

Would be nice if we could get some public service type ad space in the
popular media about the damages to parks by such behaviour or even a
spot on the various kids shows that focus on the environment.

Best regards
Sadia

Hi,
We seem to have a major problem with greenbelt dumping. Every time I
visit a rustic park or natural greenbelt in the city, I find heaps of
yard waste, debris, old fence remnants and general yuck! We do have a
bylaw in place to protect our green spaces, however enforcement is a
challenge with limited staff and “bigger” issues.

Does anyone have a good education program, or at least suggestions for
one, that does not vilify the dumpers but gets the message across that
this is harmful to our natural spaces? I’d be interested to hear
anyone’s thoughts on this issue.

Thanks,
Kim
