Important Business - Tree Canada's 75th Million Tree!

75th million tree planted in Ottawa's historical ByWard Market (Oct. 25,
2007)
Tree Canada's 2007 annual general meeting (AGM) took place on October 25 and
26 at the Wakefield Mill, among the fabulous fall colours of Wakefield,
Quebec. The AGM followed Tree Canada's 15th year anniversary festivities,
which included a parliamentary reception hosted by the Speaker of the House
of Commons, Peter Milliken, and the ceremonial planting of our 75th million
tree with Minister of Transport, Infrastructures and Communities, Lawrence
Cannon.

Shell's Planting Continues

Shell <http://www.tcf-fca.ca/images/sponsorship/shell.gif> On September 21,
2007, Shell and Tree Canada announced an extensive planting of more than
<http://www.treecanada.ca/news/09-21-2007.htm> 120,000 trees in B.C.,
Alberta, Quebec and Ontario. Work has now been completed in the Buffalo
Lake Moraine Conservation Area near Stettler, Alberta. Shell employees
assisted in the planting under the watchful coordination of Tree Canada's
Community Advisor, Gérard Fournier and the Alberta Conservation Association.
The entire project will result in an estimated 43,000 tons of carbon dioxide
(CO2) sequestration. "Shell's work with Tree Canada is only one example of
us taking action today to manage the greenhouse gas emissions associated
with our operations," said Rob Seeley, General Manager of Sustainable
Development and External Affairs for Shell's Oil Sands division. Click here

Community Roots
Gerard Fourner <http://www.tcf-fca.ca/mistik/images/award.jpg> Gérard
Fournier is an arborist who devotes a lot of time to his community. As Tree
Canada's Community Advisor for southern Alberta, Gérard provides advice and
coordinates local Tree Canada projects, like the recent planting at Buffalo
Lake. He is the owner of the For Trees Co <http://www.fortrees.ca/> ., a
Didsbury arboricultural company operating on a 30-acre tree farm. A
long-time certified tree worker, arborist, and part time college lecturer,
Gérard is one of the few Board Certified Master Arborists with the
International Society of Arboriculture (and possibly the only one with a

IKEA Bags the Bag for Tree Canada
IKEA <http://www.tcf-fca.ca/images/sponsorship/ikea.gif> Canadians take
home an estimated 55 million plastic bags a week and IKEA Canada is trying
to reduce that number. In its commitment to reducing
<http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_CA/recall/important_information.html#2> plastic
bag consumption at its stores by 50 per cent in the next year, IKEA began
charging 5¢ per bag on October 22, 2007. It will donate all proceeds from
the sale of plastic bags to its long-term environmental partner, Tree
Canada, who will then use these funds to plant trees throughout Canada to
help offset CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions. IKEA Canada has worked with Tree
Canada for the last 10 years - planting more than 14,000 trees!

The Environment Is No Gambling Matter

third year in a row, Manitoba Lotteries Corporation (MLC) is planting 10,000
trees in an effort to offset the effects of greenhouse gas emissions
associated with its facility operations. "These seedlings will continue to
provide numerous environmental benefits for years to come," said Ken Fosty,
Tree Canada's Community Adviser and Extension Officer for the Manitoba
Forestry Association. He participated in the planting of the seedlings
(which included white spruce, Manitoba's provincial tree) along with
Courtander Enterprises, a First Nations tree planting crew based in Fort

Quebec's First Carbon Neutral Tree Plantation

This spring, in order to offset carbon emissions, a total of 17,000 trees
were planted near Sherbrooke, on abandoned farmland at Ste-Élie d'Orford.
Over 2,800 tons of CO2 will be absorbed thanks to contributions from

Gagnants de Ma rue, mes arbres - une victoire pour tous!

manifestement engagés à contribuer au reverdissement du Canada grâce à des

été remis à ces municipalités à l'appui de leurs programmes de foresterie

Le 75 millionième arbre est planté dans le Marché By, à Ottawa
L'assemblée générale annuelle (AGA) 2007 d'Arbres Canada a eu lieu les 25 et
26 octobre au Moulin de Wakefield, dans le magnifique coloris automnal de
Wakefield, Québec. L'AGA s'est déroulée après les festivités du 15e
anniversaire d'Arbres Canada, y compris une réception parlementaire tenue
par le président de la Chambre des communes, Peter Milliken, et la
plantation cérémoniale de notre 75 millionième arbre, en présence de
Lawrence Cannon, ministre des Transports, de l'Infrastructure et des
Collectivités.

Shell poursuit la plantation d'arbres

2007, Shell et Arbres Canada on annoncé la plantation de plus de 120 000
arbres <http://www.treecanada.ca/news/09-21-2007_f.htm> en C.-B., en
Alberta, au Québec et en Ontario. Les travaux sont maintenant terminés dans
l'aire de conservation de la moraine de Buffalo Lake, près de Stettler, en
Alberta. La coordination de la plantation fut effectuée par l'Alberta
Conservation Association, en collaboration avec le conseiller communautaire
d'Arbres Canada, Gérard Fournier. On estime que le projet global entraînera
la séquestration de 43 000 tonnes de dioxyde de carbone (CO2). « Le travail
collaboratif de Shell et Arbres Canada n'est qu'un exemple des mesures déjà
prises pour contrôler les émissions de gaz à effet de serre associée à nos
activités » indique Rob Seeley, directeur général du Développement durable
et des Affaires extérieures pour la Division des sables bitumineux de Shell.

Racines communautaires

Gérard Fournier consacre beaucoup de temps à sa communauté. En effet, il
occupe le poste de conseiller communautaire d'Arbres Canada à Didsbury, en
Alberta. Son rôle consiste à donner des conseils et à coordonner les projets
d'Arbres Canada, y compris la plantation récente d'arbres à Buffalo Lake. Il
est propriétaire de l'entreprise d'arboriculture For Trees Company et d'une
ferme forestière de 30 acres, à Didsbury. Conférencier à temps partiel
auprès de nombreux collèges, travailleur forestier et arboriste agréé depuis
de nombreuses années, Gérard compte parmi les quelques maîtres arboristes
détenteurs de certificats de spécialistes décernés par l'International
Society of Arboriculture (et peut-être le seul détenant un diplôme en

Campagne des sacs - IKEA
IKEA <http://www.tcf-fca.ca/images/sponsorship/ikea.gif> Chaque semaine,
les Canadiens emmènent chez eux quelque 55 millions de sacs en plastique et
IKEA Canada tente de réduire ce nombre. L'entreprise s'est engagée à
réduire <http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_CA/recall/important_information.html#2>
de 50 % la consommation de ces sacs à ses magasins; dès le 22 octobre 2007,
elle exigeait des frais de 5¢ par sac. IKEA remettra tous les produits de
vente des sacs en plastique à son partenaire environnemental de longue date,
Arbres Canada, qui utilisera ces fonds pour planter des arbres partout au
pays afin d'aider à compenser les émissions de CO2. Depuis les dix dernières
années, IKEA Canada a collaboré avec Arbres Canada à la plantation de plus
de 14 000 arbres.

proclamations de la Journée
