Attend the 2008 OUFC Conference to learn how the various components:
understory plant species, insects and wildlife, water and soil make up the
Urban Forest. Find out how urban development has changed and compromised the
natural balance and what can be done to preserve Urban Forests for the
future.

The 2008 OUFC Conference, The Urban Forest - A Place to Evolve, explores the
many elements and relationships that make up the Urban Forest and how they
contribute to its evolution.

Urban Forests face many challenges such as loss of soil volume due to built
structures and hardening of surfaces with concrete and asphalt. That in turn
reduces absorption of rainwater, necessitating stormwater channels to
control the fast flow of water. How do trees adapt? And what can be done to
help? These are some of the issues to be tackled and discussed at the
conference.

Urban Forests depend upon many relationships for survival and a healthy
existence. Wildlife, understory plants and insects play a vital role in
contributing to a healthy ecosystem. Invasive non-native species can throw
the delicate balance off kilter. Methods of controlling the invaders will be
outlined as will the seed collection and sourcing of Community Seed Heritage
Trees to ensure that the native tree species will be around for the future.

Community groups have proven to be very effective at advocating for the
protection, improvement and increase of Urban Forests. Topics in this regard
will include, naturalization of city parks, preservation of ravine forests,
neighbourhood tree planting and expansion of green corridors

The conference explores the connection between Urban Forests and people as a
very important relationship that ultimately can help undo the damage of
development and make certain that the vital forest ecosystems continue to
evolve and thrive.
