Hello,
We recently completed a pretty comprehensive Strategic Urban Forest
Management Plan for the Town of Oakville in collaboration with Dr. Andy
Kenney. You can see it on line at :
http://www.oakville.ca/Media_Files/forestry/2008UFSMPappendices.pdf
We have a section on public engagement that may be of interest.

London will be developing a strategic plan starting next year. Our first
step was to complete a UFORE analysis (which is in progress now and will be
completed in 2009). We hope to first identify the environmental importance
of our urban forest and then tie that to our Official Plan environmental
goal statements. We have a Tree and Forests Advisory Committee with
representatives from across the community that will review the UFORE
analysis and will be actively involved in setting the direction and
recommendations that go into a strategy.
The City of Calgary recently published their Parks Urban Forest Strategic
Plan on their website and this might be a good place for you to start.

Bradley,
This was a community based planning project I managed.
The community is different but the methodology is sound.
It involves both community meetings and key individual "tailgate"
meetings.
The completed document is here feel free to contact me via email to discuss.

I?m under the notion that successful city planning requires planners to be
in-tune with their community?s true values and vision in order to
appropriately and realistically plan for the future. In the same manner,
city foresters need to determine the heart and soul of their community
before their planning process can be truly effective. We are presently
exploring how we can accomplish this in Thunder Bay as we develop our urban
forest master plan. How would you approach this? What values are essential
in influencing your plan? Would you work through a community based steering
team? What questions would you ask? Any insight would be helpful!
