The City of Brantford is also looking at a initiating a similar program. I
am not aware of any Canadian instances; the only long-term program like
this that I am aware of is run through Trees New York (they've been
running since at least 1992). They have some excellent information
available. You can purchase their training guides and information even if
you can't attend their courses. I purchased their training guide and it
is an excellent resource. More info is available at www.treesny.org or by
phone 212.227.1887.

The City of Thunder Bay, in conjunction with a volunteer tree advocacy
group- Trees Thunder Bay, is beginning to design a Citizen Pruner Program.
This program is designed to train/ educate city resident volunteers on
pruning/ tree trimming techniques for tree care maintenance from ground
level, on City trees. We would like to give this program a trial run
through in the fall and hopefully continue well into the future. Our goal
is to help improve our urban forest?s health and value and reduce the
number of tree trim or hazard tree calls that the City of Thunder Bay
receives, as well as give city residents the opportunity to participate in
urban forest stewardship. My question is: Has any other city in Canada
attempted this? Does any Canadian city presently run a similar program?
And if so, can you suggest how exactly you would design such a program? We
are looking at issues such as; liability, union issues, education
material, supervision, certification, type of pruning, equipment and
advertising.
Thank you. We appreciate any comments, suggestion or program material on
this subject.
