Hi all,

Just have to weigh in on this: Jean Lauriault writes in his Identification
Guide to the Trees of Canada ( 1989) : "Ohio Buckeye (Aesculus glabra) is
probably also indigenous to southern Ontario. In fact, a population of large
trees was confirmed on Walpole Island in 1982 (S.J. Darbyshire and K.M.
Oldman 1985) He goes on to say that despite the nuts being eaten
occasionally by squirrels, they are poisonous, as are all the members of the
Aesculus genus. Stephen Donaldson, in his Natural History of the Trees of
Eastern North America (1950), wrote that First nations would sometimes used
the ground nuts to throw into the water and stun fish, so they could be
scooped up for dinner. Another text somewhere mentioned if the seeds are
boiled three times, throwing the water each time, they can be eaten safely.
( who's going to try this one first?)

Ohio Buckeye once grew all over North America, as the pollen is found peat
bogs of Alberta, indicating it was here prior to 17,000 years ago.

The tree is perfectly hardy here in Alberta, even in Banff.

Don't let your cattle eat too many, though!

According to this study it appears the horse chestnut is more toxic to
chicken and hamsters than ohio buckeye. Just one study however.

Hello

Does this mean the related, long-planted horse chestnut does not have
similar toxicity problems - or just has never been an issue?
