Hi Geoff,

You can have a look at our Urban Tree Protection By-law at:

http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/healthy_lawns/forestry/urban_tree_conservation/index_en.html

This by-law was enacted last year and applies only to private property in the urban area of Ottawa. In summary, there are two parts to this by-law:

1) A Distinctive Tree Permit is required to remove trees over 50 cm in diameter on properties less than 1 ha

2) A Tree Permit is required to remove trees over 10 cm in diameter on properties greater than 1 ha OR those properties associated with most development applications.

There is a separate by-law from 2006 that protects municipal trees..…you can check that out at:

http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/bylaw/a_z/tree_en.html

Cheers,

We have come to a point in Saskatoon where we need to start to readdress our tree protection policy. This year alone, we anticipate the loss of ¾ million dollars to construction projects. I have been requested by council to address how we are protecting our trees from construction(Ironic as they are driving the development). Anyways, I would appreciate any documentation for your respective municipalities (urban or rural) that I may be able to take a look at so I can start rewriting our policies and turn them into a potential bylaw.

Thank you everyone

p.s. time is ticking away for the 2010 ISA Prairie Chapter conference here in Saskatoon. Check out www.isaprairie.com for information about the conference as well as the Tree Climbing Championships.
