I am sending this out mainly to Ontario municipal urban forest staff who may not be on MAUFS mailing list in hopes they will see the need for their support at this time.

Hi Lionel and Brian:

I am not experienced in these matters so I spoke with my contact at AMO, Jennifer Mark.

She advised me that it would be helpful at this stage for AMO to receive more than one ( Oakville's) municipal approved endorsement of the attached resolution.
Then AMO staff would put together a briefing note for AMO Exec.
Then AMO Exec. may do one of several things: (a) send it out to all 440 AMO members asking if there is any further interest from other municipalities and/or send a letter to the Province and/or something else….just depends on how important AMO Exec.* sees this issue.

Hope that helps.

ps
Jennifer advises that today is her last day at AMO and she has turned our file over to Nick Ruder*, Policy Advisor ( 416-971-9856 ext. 411); I have copied Nick.
* We have a power point presentation available to show AMO Exec. if needed.
pps
Am copying Tami to please ask her to ask MAUFS members how many have followed thru with this and collect Council approved resolutions?

Hi Brian,

thanks for the suggestion, which to me sounds far more manageable for both AMO and member municipalities. Perhaps John can comment. I copied others on your reply, Brian, for their information.

All the best

RE: Contacting AMO to lobby the Province re: urban forests

Hi Lionel,

I have found usually that a resolution is formulated for AMO. AMO would then endorse it and circulate to the municipalities. The municipality would usually then receive the resolution and have it endorsed by their Council. I agree with the wording provided in the attached resolution. I would suggest that the resolution be given to AMO and AMO circulate to the municipalities.

Brian

Hi Urban Forest Studies Technical Working Groups,

last fall, 2010, John McNeil led an initiative to engage the Province in taking their responsibilities for the urban forest in Ontario. The purpose is to address long-term needs, including the constant rise of tree pests and diseases. A number of us discussed approaching the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) to engage them in lobbying the Province. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) would also be approached in the same vein.

John had an initial meeting on January 18 with AMO's Policy Advisor, Jennifer Mark, at which he discussed a draft resolution for their counci to lobby the Province on support for the urban forest including EABl. AMO then encouraged the submission of the resolution by municipalities to AMO.

I suggested that I could send the resolution to the urban forest studies Technical Working Groups in order for you to decide if you wish to encourage your municipality to submit it or your own version to AMO. It was recommended that the message should be fairly consistent between municipalities. I recommend that the topic should be urban forests in the long term rather than the current issue of EAB alone. I am also discussing this with Conservation Ontario.

Please find the resolution attached below. And please feel free to contact either myself or John (copied) for more information or to make suggestions.
