The City of Saskatoon is an Employment Equity employer.
Duties
1. Develops and maintains a computerized data management system for pest control activities and related programs.
2. Conducts investigative studies using approved scientific methodologies, demonstrating skill and judgement in the use of laboratory and/or field equipment and instrumentation; evaluates and applies the appropriate statistical analysis to the data collected.
3. Collects, rears and identifies insect specimens according to standard methodologies and ensures that unique or unusual specimens are preserved for reference purposes.
4. Investigates and responds to enquiries from clients regarding pest-related concerns by meeting with clients and proposing mutually agreeable solutions and providing information about Pest Management programs and services.
5. Assists with the enforcement of the provincial Dutch Elm Disease regulations.
6. Represents Pest Management at warranty inspections for all City of Saskatoon construction projects involving trees and shrubs assesses plant material for pests, diseases and overall health.
7. Prepares reports of field activities and special projects as appropriate.
8. Provides training and guidance to employees performing activities related to insect pest identification, biology and control and operating equipment.
9. Prepares and presents informational, educational and public awareness discussions for other departments, schools, public meetings etc.
10. Assists with the development of operational procedures.
11. Consults with other municipalities and other levels of government to stay current with new initiatives.
12. Supports and promotes a safe and positive workplace culture through a variety of initiatives and activities.
13. Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations in addition to the City of Saskatoon's Administrative Occupational Health & Safety Policies and departmental procedures.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
* Degree in the biological sciences specializing in entomology. Graduate degree preferred.
* Two years' practical entomological experience in the identification and control of invertebrate/vertebrate pest species, including experience in ecological field work data collection.
* Possession of or the ability to obtain within three months after date of hire, all applicable pesticide applicator permits.
* Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
* Current driver's abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
* Possession of, or the ability to obtain within six months from the date of hire, valid first aid and CPR certificates.
* Considerable knowledge of insect anatomy, physiology and behaviour.
* Knowledge of insect taxonomy with the ability to identify insects to the level of genus and species.
* Knowledge and understanding of plant physiology, ecology and tree diseases.
* Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and instrumentation in the area of entomological laboratory and/or field work.
Hours
Shift work and weekend work is involved.
Salary
$4,503.90 to $4,965.54 per month (2009 rates).
