Hi Peter,
I checked with Dr. Leonard Hutchison, who is a mycologist in the Faculty
of Natural Resources Management at Lakehead University and he suggested
that it could be some sort of crust fungus (Corticiaceae). He said that
it was only a guess because without a specimen in hand, it was impossible
to know for sure. Dr. Hutchison said that if it was a crust fungus, then
it would be causing decay in the branches. Hope that helps.

Has anyone seen this? I was sent a picture from multiple trees in Ottawa
asking to try and ID this. Apparently throughout the crowns randomly and
spongy underneath. Does not look like a lichen but could be wrong. Trees
are stressed too. It’s kind of fun trying to diagnose from such a small
caption!
