Mike,
Not to sound defensive;
We are actually doing some of this type of work. As a matter of fact we are in the midst of a discussion regarding the conversion of street into a pedestrian friendly park, with heavy emphasis on all three levels of soil volume expansion; Silvia cells, structural soils, and one of my favorite root canals.
Interestingly, the Street folks do not want to see large trees (+80 feet) in the pits, and the Parks UF and LA want them.
